The American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that protects and defends the rights set forth in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. As Executive Director, I oversee all aspects of the organization, including strategic planning, governance, partnering, fundraising, financial oversight, litigation strategy, legislative advocacy, public education, and communications.  During my tenure, the annual budget of the ACLU of Massachusetts has grown from $700,000 to $7 million; cash reserves have grown from $300,000 to $12 million, membership has grown from 10,000 to 80,000 people; and the staff has expanded from ten to 35 people.  Strategic initiatives of the ACLU of MA during my tenure: Technology for Liberty Program, which convenes high-tech business leaders, data scientists, advocates, and grassroots community members to promote intersectionality and the development of technology in the service of liberty;Justice for All Program, which convenes and mobilizes diverse stakeholders and groups from traditionally oppressed communities in partnership with advocates and elected leaders to foster and support grassroots, movement-oriented, approaches to social justice reform; Art for justice programming, including a range of collaborations with artists in the world of theater, written and spoken word, music, dance, and visual arts to promote transformative programming focused on social justice;Immigrant Protection Project, which trains volunteer lawyers and community-based service organizations to work collaboratively with leaders from immigrant communities to resist indiscriminate detentions and deportations, while fostering community safety and family unification.

Attorney in private practice, specializing in First Amendment, Publishing, Intellectual Property, and Internet law.  Provided pro bono representation to artists through Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, and litigated several civil rights cases for the ACLU and the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC), including a groundbreaking successful civil rights class action on behalf of more than 2,000 mentally disabled adults.

Lived and traveled throughout South Asia, publishing more than 35 long-form journalism pieces, including: impact of financial aid on local communities; legal rights of indigenous peoples; daily life for Afghan women in Purdah; slave trafficking of women and children; religious minorities in Islam; the role of music in building community; and the plight of refugees from Burma, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Tibet. Inducted as an honorary member of the Kalashamon tribe of the Northwest Frontier Province, Pakistan.
