Barbara D. Boyan, Ph.D., is a distinguished figure in the field of Biomedical Engineering, holding the Alice T. and William H. Goodwin, Jr. Chair in Biomedical Engineering and serving as the Executive Director of the Institute for Engineering and Medicine at VCU College of Engineering.
Dr. Boyan's research focuses on bone and cartilage biology, ranging from fundamental studies on hormone signaling to utilizing cells for regenerative medicine applications and exploring cell-biomaterial interactions.
She is renowned for her contributions to understanding the mechanisms of mineralized tissue formation and has made significant advancements in technologies for modulating surface nanotexture on metal and polymer surfaces to investigate cell responses for regenerative medicine purposes.
As an accomplished entrepreneur, Dr. Boyan has co-founded several companies in the healthcare sector, such as Pascal Medical Corporation, SpherIngenics, Inc., Orthonics, Inc., OsteoBiologics, Inc., and Biomedical Development Corporation, where she has held key executive positions.
With a strong commitment to enhancing global quality of life, she has also been involved in numerous Boards of Directors for various companies, contributing to the progress of scientific innovation.
Dr. Boyan's influential work is evidenced by her extensive publication record, comprising over 540 peer-reviewed papers, reviews, and book chapters, along with 24 issued US patents. She has also been recognized for her exceptional leadership and mentorship, having guided numerous doctoral and master's students.
Having held positions at esteemed institutions like VCU and Georgia Institute of Technology, Dr. Boyan's academic journey includes earning her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology from Rice University.
Moreover, Dr. Boyan has a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mineralized Tissues from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and served as a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University.
Her illustrious career also saw her serve as CEO, Co-founder, and Chief Scientific Officer at Pascal Medical Corporation, and in roles such as Dean of the College of Engineering at VCU and Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
