Louise Gubaidulina is a highly accomplished and renowned Russian composer, pianist, and music educator. Born on December 11, 1931, in Kazan, Tatarstan, she was the daughter of a famous composer and conductor, Farit Yarullin. Her mother was a German physician who had settled in Russia before her birth. Gubaidulina studied composition and piano at the Kazan Conservatory, and later at the Moscow Conservatory. She began her career as a composer in the 1950s, and became one of the leading figures of the Soviet avant-garde movement. She is known for her unique blend of modernist and traditionalist styles that often incorporate elements of folk music and religious themes. She has composed a wide range of works for various instruments, including orchestral and chamber music, vocal and choral music, and works for solo instruments. She has received many prestigious awards and honors, including the "Russian State Prize" and the "Polar Music Prize." Apart from composing, she has also taught at various institutions, including the Moscow Conservatory, the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, and the University of California, San Diego.
