In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, six year-old Hushpuppy exists on the brink of orphanhood. Her mother long gone, and her beloved father Wink a wildman on a perpetual spree, Hushpuppy is left to her own devices on an isolated compound filled with semi-feral animals. She perceives the natural world to be a fragile web of living, breathing, squirting things, in which the entire universe depends on everything fitting together just right. So when a hundred year storm raises the waters around her town, her daddy is suddenly stricken with illness, and fierce pre-historic creatures awaken from their frozen graves to come charging across the planet, Hushpuppy sees the natural order of everything she holds dear collapsing around her. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive an unstoppable catastrophe of epic proportions. In the middle of the plains, along the meandering Rio Grande, sits Eagle Pass, Texas, a town of about 30,000. For centuries, this border town has shared a physical as well as cultural landscape with those across the river, coexisting, intermarrying, culturally cross-pollinating and establishing a singular bi-national community in the American West. But now its geographic location has suddenly placed Eagle Pass literally and figuratively in the middle of divisive debates over violence, immigration, and international trade. However, these ideas only boil under the surface of the more humanistic, local approach of the Ross Brothers. Processing cattle, switching trains, waiting tables, dancing at the rodeo, raising a family, the camera co-exists with a cross-section of lives in Maverick County’s isolated desert location. This film is the Ross brothers’ Western: a sprawling portrait and emotional mosaic, a living, breathing visual essay on the realities of the frontier in the 21st century.
