Azer Bestavros
Distinguished Professor and Associate Provost for Computing & Data Sciences at Boston University
Azer Bestavros is a distinguished professor and the inaugural Associate Provost for Computing & Data Sciences at Boston University, a position he has held since December 2019.7 He is also the William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor of Computer Science, a title he received in May 2017.7
Bestavros joined Boston University in 1991 after completing his PhD at Harvard University.1 He chaired the Computer Science Department from 2000 to 2007.13 In 2010, he became the Founding Director of the Hariri Institute for Computing, a role he held until his appointment as Associate Provost.37
As Associate Provost, Bestavros leads BU's Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences, a university-wide academic unit focused on advancing computational research and education.4 Under his leadership, the unit has grown to include 56 faculty members from 24 departments across 11 schools.4
Bestavros' research interests include privacy-preserving computing, trustworthy distributed systems, content distribution networks, and cloud resource management.4 His work has yielded 20 PhD theses, 8 patents, 2 startups, and hundreds of refereed papers with over 24,000 citations.4
Born on May 2, 1961, Bestavros is of Coptic Egyptian origin.56 He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science from Alexandria University in Egypt, and a master's and doctorate in computer science from Harvard University.36
Throughout his career, Bestavros has received numerous accolades, including the ACM Sigmetrics Inaugural Test of Time Award and BU's United Methodist Scholar/Teacher of the Year award.2 He has also held visiting professorships at several institutions worldwide.5
