Askan Weidemann
Graduate Student at the University of Oxford
Askan Weidemann is a Doctoral Researcher at the GIGA Institute for Asian Studies since October 2021.2 He is pursuing his doctoral thesis on "The digitalization of the Chinese petitioning (xinfang) system under the conditions of the political system of the People's Republic of China".2
Weidemann's academic background includes:
- M.Sc. in Contemporary Chinese Studies from the University of Oxford, where he was a DAAD scholarship recipient.2
- B.A. in Liberal Arts and Sciences from University College Maastricht (Maastricht University) and UC Berkeley, with a concentration in Politics and International Relations.2

Weidemann has significant experience in China, including Chinese language studies at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou and an exchange year at No. 3 Senior Highschool in Anshan.2 He has also completed internships in Beijing and Hanoi, gaining practical experience in international relations and research.2
As of February 2025, Weidemann has recently conducted research in China, having been a Research Fellow at Tsinghua University in Beijing in 2023 and completed a second research stay in Shanghai and Hangzhou in 2024.1
