Art Venegas

Arturo "Art" Venegas is a distinguished figure in the realm of track and field, particularly known for his expertise in throwing events. Born in 1951 in Tepic, Mexico, he had an impressive athletic career during his youth, excelling in shot put and discus throw at Saint Genevieve High School. He later attended California State University, Northridge (CSUN), where he earned Division II All-American honors as a hammer thrower while majoring in Spanish and political science.

Coaching Career

Venegas joined UCLA's coaching staff as the throwing events coach after a stint at California State University, Long Beach. Over his 28 years at UCLA, he significantly impacted the program, guiding athletes to 33 NCAA championships and 67 conference titles. His coaching prowess led to numerous accolades for his athletes, including several who became Olympians and set collegiate records. Notably, he coached John Godina, a two-time Olympic medalist and world champion.

In 1999, Venegas became the head coach of the UCLA track program, under which the team won multiple championships and produced numerous All-American athletes. His contributions to the sport were recognized when he was inducted into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2022.

Venegas has also been acknowledged for his influence beyond UCLA; he was named one of the "100 Most Influential Hispanics in the U.S." by Hispanic Business Magazine in 1998. He has served as a speaker at various international coaching conferences and has worked with national teams from other countries.
