Anne Quito

Anne Quito is a prominent journalist and design critic based in both New York City and Barcelona. She is recognized for her insightful coverage of design and architecture, having previously served as a staff reporter at Quartz, where she contributed significantly to the publication's design section.

Education and Early Career

Quito holds a Master's degree in visual culture from Georgetown University, earned in 2009, and an MFA in design criticism from the School of Visual Arts, obtained in 2014. Her master's thesis focused on nation branding in South Sudan, which she presented at a design criticism conference.1

Professional Accomplishments

In addition to her work at Quartz, Quito is the founding director of Design Lab for Family Health International (FHI). She has received several accolades for her writing, including the inaugural Steven Heller Prize for Cultural Commentary from the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) in 2017. Her investigative work has also garnered recognition, such as a first prize at the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing (SABEW) competition in 2021 for her reporting on the font industry.12

Quito is also an author; she wrote Mag Men: Fifty Years of Making Magazines, published by Columbia University Press in 2019, which explores the evolution of magazine design through interviews with notable graphic designers.1

Teaching and Contributions

Currently, she teaches at the School of Visual Arts' MFA program in Products of Design. Additionally, she contributes to various publications beyond Quartz, including The Atlantic, Metropolis, and Eye on Design.35
