Anna Cypionka

Anna Cypionka is a prominent figure in the field of metrology with an extensive background in scientific research and leadership roles. She completed her university studies in chemistry at the Technical University Carolo-Wilhelmina zu Braunschweig and earned a PhD in biophysics from the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Germany.12 Additionally, she holds a master's degree in public management from the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin.2
Dr. Cypionka joined the German National Metrology Institute (PTB) in 2010, where she has held various positions throughout her career.1 Her roles at PTB include:
- Project coordinator in the Department for International Technical Cooperation, managing projects with developing countries in quality infrastructure.12
- Head of the PTB Presidential Staff, a position she was appointed to in spring 2017.12
- Scientific Advisor in the Division of Medical Physics and Metrological Information Technology.3
As Head of the Presidential Staff, Dr. Cypionka's responsibilities included:
- Reporting to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate
- Planning and evaluation of the PTB work programme
- Stakeholder management
- Secretariat of the PTB Advisory Committee2
In addition to her work at PTB, Dr. Cypionka has taken on other significant roles:
- Founding director of the Innovation Center for Systems Metrology (IZSM) e.V., alongside Susanne Wiemann.46
- As of March 1, 2023, she became the Director of the International Liaison and Communication Department (ILC) at the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM).25
In her current role at BIPM, Dr. Cypionka aims to promote the organization's unique ability to bring together worldwide communities through science and address challenges related to evolving needs in global metrology.2
