Amina Doherty is a prominent Nigerian/Antiguan feminist, artist, and women's rights advocate, currently serving as the Director of the Women's Voice and Leadership-Caribbean program at the Equality Fund. Her work is deeply rooted in promoting social justice and gender equality through innovative philanthropy and community engagement initiatives.
Education and Early Career
Amina holds a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and Women's Studies from McGill University, graduating with distinction, and a Master's degree in Gender, Development, and Globalisation from the London School of Economics. She began her career as a researcher at the Directorate of Gender Affairs in Antigua and Barbuda, where she contributed to significant reports for CEDAW and various Caribbean organizations focused on feminist research and action.13
Professional Achievements
Doherty is a founding member and the first director of FRIDA | The Young Feminist Fund, which aims to empower young feminist organizations globally through small grants. She has also managed funding for women's rights organizations at the Sigrid Rausing Trust and worked extensively with the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID). Since 2019, she has led initiatives at the Equality Fund, focusing on enhancing women's voices and leadership in the Caribbean.134
In addition to her role at the Equality Fund, Amina serves on the board of the Global Fund for Women, contributing her expertise to advance gender equality on a global scale. She has also co-founded the Black Feminist Fund, which focuses on supporting Black feminist movements.234
