I was not prepared for the effects of my geriatric pregnancy. Plantar fasciitis, weak core, shrimp-like posture.

Most of this was (probably) preventable through exercise during pregnancy. Instead, I dealt with it postpartum.

    1. Pelvic floor PT During my third trimester, l asked my OB for a referral to a pelvic floor PT. The next available appointment was ~5 months later, when l'd be 3 months postpartum. My PT taught me how to properly engage my core and gave me safe exercises to start with.

    2. Treated plantar fasciitis Postpartum, I saw a podiatrist for my plantar fasciitis. Gaining almost 40% of my body weight in several months put a lot of strain on my body. The podiatrist recommended custom orthotics but I bought generic instead. He also recommended I wear Oofos slippers at home. Super comfy.

It took ~6 months but my plantar fasciitis is now gone. I wore the slippers at home half the time, barefoot the other half. Lots of calf stretches & raises, and lots of leg exercises that require balance.

    1. Fixed “mommy posture” I had also developed “mommy posture” and the accompanying shoulder pain. So I’m improving my core strength and posture.

Lots of foam rolling, core workouts, and lower back workouts. I do at-home exercises with a band, Pilates ball, and core sliders. GetMomStrong was a great resource for me.

Really happy to say I no longer have any pain, and I can hold baby and roughhouse with the little kid comfortably. (I’m down to a 25.5” waist which I haven’t had since I was in my 20s!)

It’s so important to take care of yourself. You know what they say, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

I hope this helps some new (and older) moms out there!
