    Alina Guna

    Postdoctoral Fellow at Whitehead Institute

Alina Guna is a biochemist and membrane biologist who has made significant contributions to the field of protein biogenesis and membrane biology. She completed her PhD at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, supported by a Gates-Cambridge fellowship.2 As a postdoctoral researcher, Dr. Guna has been working jointly between the Voorhees lab at Caltech and the Weissman lab at MIT and the Whitehead Institute since 2018.2 Her postdoctoral work was supported by an independent fellowship from the Human Frontier Science Program.2

Dr. Guna's research has focused on understanding how membrane proteins are synthesized and inserted into cellular membranes. She has made notable discoveries in this area, including identifying MTCH2 as a mitochondrial outer membrane protein insertase.14 This work, published in Science in October 2022, revealed a new pathway for protein insertion into mitochondria.5

In 2023, Dr. Guna received a K99 award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), which is a prestigious grant supporting promising postdoctoral researchers as they transition to independent research positions.2

Most recently, Dr. Guna announced that she will be starting her own lab as an Assistant Professor at UCSF in the Department of Biochemistry.3 This appointment marks an important step in her career as she establishes herself as an independent researcher in the field of biochemistry and membrane biology.
