Alfonso Sastre (1926-2021) was a Spanish playwright, essayist, and critic associated with the Generation of '36 movement.14 He was an outspoken critic of censorship during the reign of General Francisco Franco and the political regime that arose from the 1978 Constitution.1 Sastre was born in Madrid in February 1926, into a middle-class family, and lived through the terror and poverty of the Spanish Civil War.15

Sastre began producing existentialist works in the late 1940s with the "New Art" movement.15 In 1950, he co-signed the Theater of Social Agitation Manifesto (TAS), advocating for theater as a means of social agitation.1 His first theatrical success came in 1953 with Death Squad, though it was soon censored by Franco's regime.15 Other noteworthy plays include The Gag (1954), which explores themes of dictatorship and repression, and Death Thrust (1960).1 In 1993, he won the National Dramatic Literature Award for his play Jenofa Juncal.1

Sastre married political activist and writer Eva Forest in 1955.35 He was briefly imprisoned in 1966 for participating in the ‘National Day against Repression’ and again between 1974 and 1975.5 After being released from prison, Sastre moved to Bordeaux but was later expelled from France in 1977.5 Following his wife’s release from prison, Sastre and his family relocated to Hondarribia, where he resided until his death on September 17, 2021.345
