Alexander Lenail
MIT Computational Systems Biology PhD student.
Alexander LeNail is a PhD candidate in Computational & Systems Biology at MIT.13 He graduated from Tufts University in 2016 with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science.3 After graduation, he worked as a computational research technician in Ernest Fraenkel's group at MIT, developing software to analyze omics data from ALS patients and models.3
LeNail joined the Computational and Systems Biology (CSB) program at MIT in 2019.3 His current research focuses on developing novel gene therapies for age-related neurodegenerative diseases, including ALS, Huntington's, and Alzheimer's.3 He is also investigating ways to enhance the repair machinery in neurons to reverse molecular damage that accumulates during aging.2
In addition to his academic work, LeNail has gained industry experience through internships. He worked as a Research Intern at Google Brain in 2019.1 Prior to that, he completed internships at Benchling (2015) and Google Search (2015).1
LeNail is also the recipient of a fellowship from the PhRMA Foundation for his research on bolstering the resilience of aging neurons.2 This work aims to identify essential genes responsible for damage repair in neurons and potentially prevent the onset of brain diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.2
