Alex Oppes

Alex Oppes is an experienced professional with over 10 years of expertise in impact investing within the environmental and social sectors. At Virescent Ventures, Alex focuses on investing in Australia's leading climate tech companies, covering various stages from pre-seed to late growth. With a portfolio of over 20 cleantech companies, the investments span areas such as clean energy transition, mobility, smart cities, food and agriculture, and the circular economy.

Before joining Virescent Ventures, Alex was a key member of SVA's Impact Investing team, where he significantly contributed to growing the organization from c$12M FUM to over $300M. During his time at SVA, he managed investments in impactful organizations like Nightingale, STREAT, Maths Pathway, and Hayylo. Alex played a pivotal role in raising Australia's first institutional impact investing fund, the SVA Social Impact Investment Trust, securing approximately $90M in backing from HESTA. Additionally, he oversaw SVA's $15M Diversified Impact Fund and was instrumental in the launch of Vanguard Laundry Services, a successful Australian social enterprise that has provided employment opportunities for individuals with mental health challenges.

Prior to his tenure at SVA, Alex gained invaluable experience as a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Co., where he worked on due diligence processes for significant mergers and acquisitions in various regions including Australia, Asia, and Europe. Alex holds a dual BA/LLB (Hons) from the University of Melbourne and is a CFA charterholder.

Through his diverse educational background, Alex has honed his skills and knowledge in finance, law, and arts. He studied Chartered Financial Analyst at CFA Institute, completed his residency at Trinity College, University of Melbourne, and pursued a range of degrees including Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in History, Politics, and Italian at University of Melbourne, and also studied as an exchange student with a GPA of 4.0 at the University of Virginia.

In his professional journey, Alex has held key positions in various reputable organizations. Currently, he serves as an Investment Director at Virescent Ventures. Previously, he was the Founding Director at Vanguard Laundry, Director of Impact Investing at Social Ventures Australia, Principal Consultant as a Freelance Strategy Consultant, and Business Analyst at McKinsey & Company. Alex has also interned at the Department of Premier and Cabinet (Vic), Macquarie Group (Industrials M&A), and ASIC (Legal/Regulation), showcasing his broad experience across different sectors.
