Alex Canovas
Artistic Director at Young New Yorkers' Chorus
Alex Canovas is a Brooklyn-based vocal artist, conductor, and teacher who serves as the General & Artistic Director of the Young New Yorkers' Chorus (YNYC).1 He leads both the Mixed and Treble Ensembles of YNYC.13 Canovas is committed to exploring and celebrating the human voice through choral music.1
Under his direction, YNYC has achieved several notable accomplishments:
- Performed at Carnegie Hall with the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra1
- Won The American Prize in Choral Performance — Community Division, 20231
- Given world, regional, or NYC premieres of over 30 works in six seasons1
Canovas oversees YNYC's Competition for Young Composers, which has led to the commissioning of over 55 new works.1 He is an active member of Chorus America and the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), serving in various roles including New York ACDA Repertoire & Resources Co-Chair for Lifelong Community Singing.1
Prior to his current role, Canovas served as the Director of Music & Choirmaster at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brooklyn and as Associate Conductor of the vocal ensemble Choral Chameleon.1 He is a graduate of Ithaca College, where he studied with several renowned music educators.1
Canovas was appointed as YNYC's Artistic Director in 20184, bringing his expertise in conducting, singing, teaching, and arts administration to the organization.2
