Joined Google to lead Search's eye free voice products before Google Assistant was a thing. We focused on making calls, sending texts, playing music, getting directions, and answering questions for eyes-free users that were driving, wearing headphones, or the phone was locked/screen off.

Much of this provided the base for what would later become the Google Assistant, where I would continue to lead three areas 1) Local Vertical across all surfaces (speakers, screens, cars) 2) All Automotive surfaces (Android Auto, Google Maps, Waze) 3) All verticals for eyes-free surfaces.

Experience building from day one and growing existing industry leading products and surfaces. Largest win was 100x growth (non-organic and i18n) of DAU using voice while driving with Google Maps.

I led product for Zappos' small R&D arm in San Francisco. We worked on rapid iterations that demonstrated what the future of retail could be ranging from social shopping on Instagram (before it was a thing) to pop-up shops with 3D body scans for jean recommendations and RFID based checkout.

I also had the opportunity to work with Tony and deliver Open Marketplace (OM) as a stepping stone to realizing his dream of a self-managing workforce. OM enabled our call center employees to work a flexible schedule, balancing their needs with those of our customers. This was a stark contrast to the forecasting and regimented schedule common in call centers.

SPEED – I pitched and led an initiative to enable m-commerce that launched less than three months after my start date. Responsibilities entailed vendor selection, partner messaging, marketing/PR, and product design & development.

INNOVATION – As product manager for the core application team, I launched a complete redesign (and re-architecture) of the flagship mobile app while helping the team adopt a more agile development methodology. Due to the success of the project and delivering twice as fast as the previous redesign, I was asked by leadership to mentor and transition the rest of the company to similar agile principles that resulted in similar efficiency throughout.

As product owner for our first agile teams, I used my ScrumMaster background to educate and transition the teams to agile best practices. Our first project was building a new Ruby platform to speed development time. We built a Deal of the Day Facebook app intended to provide customer value and validate the platform. Next, we tested the scalability and stability of the platform by relaunching the Nextag mobile site. With the platform proven we launched a new product recommendation site, wize.com.

RESPONSIBILITY – I managed the team that built the view layer of an $80M+ platform consolidation initiative.  Despite remotely managed projects from 13 European countries, all sites launched against a tight schedule.  The lower development overhead allowed the company to right-size the technology organization.  The RIF was part of a $40M operating cost reduction that enabled Orbitz to return to profitability.

INITIATIVE – Starting with an elevator pitch to the CMO, I orchestrated an initiative to redesign Orbitz, Cheaptickets, and ebookers. After I involved our IA, design, and product teams, it quickly became a top organizational priority that resulted in the first new look on Orbitz in over 6 years.  I worked on the architecture, design, and managed development across the legacy and global platforms to ensure the implementation was easily supportable across brands and highly scalable.

INNOVATION – In a technology leadership role, I oversaw the migration from MapQuest to Google Maps.  Involving our domestic and international brands, the transition occurred across two platforms. The project included Google Street View for hotels – a first for an online travel agency. The team delivered against our aggressively estimated project plans, delivering a product with a greatly simplified workflow, cleaner code and reduction in operating cost for our geocoding and mapping solutions.

SOCIAL MEDIA - As the organization’s Twitter evangelist, I worked on Orbitz’s “free flight” contests.  My involvement included the viral concept, copywriting, legal review, technical development and analytics tool development.  During the initial contest, Orbitz followers increased sevenfold within 15 hours and resulted in a lot of earned media too.  The subsequent Twitter-only 48-hour promo code resulted in a 2% conversion across the new follower base.  When we ran the contest again we were able to leapfrog our competitors' social reach and cement our leadership in the travel space.

Townsend was primarily a traditional print and direct mail agency. I was hired as the lead developer and quickly transitioned to a manager role as the workload increased. I recruited, mentored, and managed our 6-person interactive team.

We worked on a myriad of email, intranet, and microsite projects for financial companies, including Discover, U.S. Bank, and Rewards Network. I put together and presented all new business pitches for our company's interactive business, resulting in 10x revenue over my tenure.

I developed Metropolitan Bank Group's first intranet. Highlights include automating the PDF creation of flyers for weekly interest rate changes, AJAX powered employee directory, server management console for IT, and a web application for our training center to handle sign-up, attendance, grading, and course materials.

On the IT side, I performed network and sysadmin tasks, managed a data center migration, and trained staff to maintain our migration from Netware to SUSE Linux.

I performed quality assurance testing of analog/TDMA/GSM cellular handsets in a laboratory and the field. Gathered requirements and developed an inventory management web application for tracking prototype handsets amongst engineers and partner companies.

The highlight of my experience at PrairieComm was leading a field test in Quito, Ecuador alongside Bell South and Telian.
