My colleague Amrut and I caught up with prof @bussgang on our Boston trip. Jeff has had incredible impact on Amrut, I, and many friends over the years. Always kind, helpful, and approachable!
As an international student at @HarvardHBS, independently making career decision was a new and unsettling concept to me. My prior career decisions were mainly driven by where my grades/marks/ranks placed me in the slots of society, almost on autopilot mode. :)
Losing myself in the dilemma of choices and then discovering and trying to deserve what I truly love was the best gift of my two-year HBS experience to me.
I first met Jeff in the #HBSLTV class at @HarvardHBS almost a decade ago. Those days, I was soulsearching whether I could have a future in venture capital and how to find the right firm. I asked Jeff for advice and he shared a four-point framework.
- Do you love your future colleagues and imagine working with them everyday for years?
- Are they great investors?
- Will they be able to raise their next fund?
- Do you see yourself working in venture capital for at least 10 years?
I told Jeff, I felt a strong YES on first three but wasn’t sure on #4, mainly whether I would survive that long in the business. He mentioned, very few have conviction on #4 and advised me to go for it. That’s when I moved to Bay Area alongwith my wife in Jul 2015 to start the journey with @NexusVP.
Many years later, when we were facing visa struggles, Jeff was one of the first few people to generously write a strong letter of support for my EB1 green card process that contributed to our immigration freedom.
As Jeff and I met yesterday, we recalled this and shared a good laugh that this is my 10th year in the business. :)
Hugely grateful. Thank you, Jeff!
