Courtney Mattison is an accomplished marine ecologist, ceramicist, artist, and ocean advocate. Hailing from San Francisco, California, Courtney received her interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree in Marine Ecology and Ceramic Sculpture from Skidmore College in 2008. She went on to complete her Master of Arts in Environmental Studies from Brown University with coursework at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2011.

Courtney is passionate about raising awareness for the conservation of our oceans and their ecosystems. Her intricate ceramic sculptural works are inspired by the fragile beauty of coral reefs, and exhibit the human-made threats they face. Her works have been exhibited at science and art venues worldwide, including the Washington D.C. headquarters of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center, and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art.

She has been featured in several international science, art, and culture publications like Smithsonian Magazine, Science Magazine, and Colossal. In 2015, Origin Magazine named her one of the top 100 “Ocean Heroes,” and the International SeaKeepers Society named her Artist of the Year.

Courtney has held various professional roles throughout her career, including a former teaching assistant at Brown University, Mima Weissmann Fellow, and Teaching Assistant at Harvard University. She has also worked as a biological sculptor at James Cook University, a research intern at California Academy of Sciences, and a research assistant at The Leatherback Trust and Stanford University. Currently, she serves as a Special Projects Consultant at Mission Blue/Sylvia Earle Alliance.
