CEO at Wayne County Airport Authority
Chad Newton, A.A.E., is the Chief Executive Officer of the Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA), which oversees operations at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) and Willow Run Airport. He has held this position since November 2018, following his appointment by the WCAA Board. Newton manages an annual operating budget of approximately $400 million and is responsible for defining the strategic direction of these major transportation hubs, which significantly impact the economy of southeast Michigan, contributing around $10 billion annually.12
Background and Experience:
Chad Newton brings over 24 years of airport management experience and more than 34 years in law enforcement to his role. He began his career in public safety as a Military Police officer in the United States Army and later served with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department. In 2002, he transitioned to the Wayne County Airport Authority Police Department, where he advanced through various roles, ultimately becoming Vice President of Public Safety before his appointment as CEO.12
Newton is recognized for his commitment to continuous improvement, which has led to several accolades for DTW, including awards for customer service from Airports Council International and J.D. Power. He emphasizes the importance of employee development and operational excellence within the organization.12
Education and Certifications:
Newton holds a bachelor's degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice and a master's degree in Technology Studies with a focus on Law Enforcement from Eastern Michigan University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy and is one of approximately 500 airport executives in the U.S. certified as an Accredited Airport Executive (A.A.E.) by the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), making him the first CEO at WCAA to achieve this distinction.123
Community Involvement:
In addition to his role at WCAA, Newton serves on the Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents, having been appointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in March 2021. He is actively involved in community service and education, sharing his expertise through teaching at local colleges.24
