NFTE provides entrepreneurship education to at risk youth within inner city school systems. Over its 30 years, NFTE has trained (thus far) + 1MM high school/middle school kids in the USA from 22 states and 2,000 school systems and has licensed its core curriculum in 9 countries. NFTE students are more likely to finish school and seek additional training and education post high school. Their 3Rs,  leadership quotient, career aspirations and locus of control are all positively impacted. Research has shown that NFTE alumni out-earn their non-NFTE peers by a whopping 50%. 

NFTE executed on its plan to Modernize, Digitize and Monetize its curriculum in order to reach 200,000 students/year (a many fold increase). With increased Impact, Reach & Sustainability, NFTE is a shaker and a mover in its field.

Alliance Consulting Group (Chairman): IT Consulting to financial services and pharma verticals. Built to +$100MM. Sold to secondary private equity player Saints Capital in a bundle with 5 other firms.

Advanced BioHealing (Observer & Advisor): Regenerative Medicine. Grew from scratch to $200MM. Filed an S1. Acquired by Shire for $750MM before IPO priced. $145MM cash to Safeguard, a 13X return and the 3rd largest cash return in its history.

Clarient (NASDAQ: CLRT, Director): Repositioned and rebranded failing Cellular Imaging Systems provider to Cancer Diagnostic Services. Assembled strong team. Built to +$120MM. Fast 50. Increased market cap 5X. Acquired by GE for ~$600MM, giving Safeguard $206MM, the largest cash return in its history. 

Laureate Pharma (Director): Bioprocessing Manufacturing Outsourcer. Retooled competitive positioning to achieve niche leadership. Centerpiece of bundled sale to Saints Capital for $106MM.

Mantas (Chairman): Fraud Detection Analytical Software. Focused the business on financial services market for anti-money laundering applications. Built the business from scratch to ~$35MM. Niche leader. Acquired by Oracle for $127MM, a 4X increase in value.

MediaMath (Observer & Advisor)): Digital Media Buying Data and Reporting Software & Services whose analytics allow ad agencies and major advertisers to select placement of digital display ads. Enables marketers to manage campaigns according to specific objectives. AlwaysOn top 100 global private company with +$250MM in revenue. Sold to private equity with a +4X return. 

Changes in board & management composition, strategy, and market conditions cratered the company thereafter. Recurring theme from which much can be learned.

Safeguard Partner Companies

Safeguard had a rich and colorful seven-decade history as a venture capital-like holding company. It evolved from industrial products in 1953 to data processing services in the '70s to technology in the '80s & 90's (hardware, communications, software) to an internet incubator when the bubble was full. 

With the burst of the bubble, Safeguard suffered a spectacular collapse and joined the 90% club (having lost 90% of market value). A disastrous first attempt to recoup from the bubble resulted in a portfolio of low value, cash-consuming holdings and choking debt. The stock plummeted further to below $1/share (the 99% club) and put the company on the verge of bankruptcy. Safeguard was considered to be a dead or dying new century loser, close to being delisted from the NYSE.

I assembled a terrific team to transform that platform. We created a new strategy and investment thesis, divested of non-strategic legacy businesses, built value in a few remaining companies that garnered giant cash gains, and then deployed ~$330MM into two dozen high growth science & technology situations that reflected the new strategy. Three of those companies IPO'd. Others were acquired by private equity or strategic buyers Oracle, Eli Lilly, Shire, BD, McKesson, Teva, PTC and GE (for +$1 billion), yielding top tier venture returns.

Inside of 8 years,  nearly debt-free Safeguard achieved record net cash, a surging stock, a winning portfolio of new partner companies (which grew their revenue from <$50 million to >$400 million), and recaptured its acclaim as a winner. My perfectly timed retirement. 

Within 10 subsequent years, due to changes in management & board composition, strategy, shareholder mind-set and market conditions., tables were turned once again. Much learning can be gleaned from a business school case study.

Global private equity/mid market buyout and venture capital firm with $20 Billion under management. 

Evaluated and contributed to deal flow and due diligence. Provided advice and counsel to selected portfolio and sat on several boards representing Advent's interests, to include: 

--MarketSoft (Executive Chairman):  eCRM Software. Acquired by Unica/IBM

--Power Steering Software: Program Mgt SaaS. Acquired by Canadian PE firm, Silberback Enterprise Group, then merged with Tenrox.
 
--Procuri: e-Procurement SaaS. Acquired by Ariba/SAP. 

Advent was, and continues to be, a blue chip, top quartile, 38% IRR performer.

Operating Partner

Web-based, Digital Data Room to automate business processes used by legal & financial services firms for loan syndication and M&A due diligence, the pharma community for drug trial data transfer and by industry at large for secure board room reporting. 

Coached first-time CEO through several stages of growth and readied for IPO. 

Controlling interest acquired by Private Equity firm TA, then IPO'd. Achieved +$1 Billion market cap. Subsequently merged with Synchronoss Technologies (SNCR), where IntraLinks CEO took the helm as CEO of the combined company. SNCR has been scooped up by private equity firm Siris Capital Group.

IntraLinks, Inc. (NYSE: IL)

Chairman

Cloud-based Application Outsourcer serving the mid market, sponsored by private equity firms pProvidence Equity and Spectrum Equity. Started as a part time consulting engagement as Vice Chairman, then went full time as CEO. 

Refocused to stimulate organic growth, supplemented by 3 acquisitions, then acquired by NaviSite, which, in turn, was acquired by Time Warner Cable. Achieved top decile return. NaviSite was subsequently acquired by Accenture.

Surebridge, Inc

Chairman & CEO

eCRM Software firm founded in Europe. General Atlantic bought out a co-founder, then hired me to move HQ, intro new products and expand U. S. presence. 

Recognized in Inc. 500 and Fast 50, IPO'd, then acquired by Chordiant Software, which, in turn, was acquired by PegaSystems.

Recognized in the Software 100, then was acquired by Sterling Software, which, in turn, was acquired by CA Technologies.

Group of 9 Prentice Hall companies serving legal & financial markets trapped inside a Fortune 100 firm with no strategic fit. 

Restructured/repositioned portfolio, significantly  increasing operating performance.

Raised capital and attempted a management buyout, which was thwarted when Viacom acquired Paramount.
