SDE1 in Amazon Instant Video. Worked on the launch of Amazon Video for 2016 smart TVs and worked on the PS3 and PS4 Amazon Video apps, specifically the video player portion.

Writing software for the PlayStation 3 and Linux-based platforms as part of a flagship project at Amazon Instant Video. This involved familiarising myself with integrating various scripting languages with native code (i.e. C++), owning the creation of PS3 continuous integration tasks and writing custom tools in order to aid the development of large-scale software solutions. It also involved taking part in the porting effort from Linux-based platforms to PS3 (dealing with differences in compiler features, further decoupling application logic from the underlying system).

Laying the foundations for Artificial Intelligence researchers to use the Parrot AR Drone quadcopter as a viable platform for testing artificial intelligence.This involved, amongst other things, writing software to simulate the AR Drone's server software; the client connects via wi-fi to the drone or via any available network interface (including the loopback to the localhost) to the simulation software. Whichever server is in use then sends a video stream (from one of the drone's two cameras or, in the case of my software, from either a webcam or from external robotics simulation software) and a navigation data stream (consisting of data about the drone's velocity, altitude, etc.), whilst receiving commands from the client (in the case of my server software, there is the option to use these commands to control the simulation in the aforementioned robotics simulation software).I also gained experience working with circuits controlled by AVR microcontrollers; since the AR Drone does not come with proximity sensors pointing to the side, I learned about interfacing an AVR microcontroller with a computer using USB and the V-USB library. As this was not the main focus of my work, it is unfinished but is something I intend to continue to experiment with.

Two Summer placements and an Easter placement for a total of approximately three months.Writing software for use around the firm. Three main solutions were developed:- The first was a piece of software to allow for the quick viewing and editing of files related to specific cases in a Progress Database managed by LexisNexis' VisualFiles case management software. It included a file previewer (shown through an interface exposed by Window's COM) which allowed the user to view case files themselves as well as data related to them in one streamlined flow instead of having to wait to open any potentially interesting files.- The second was a piece of software designed to make the process of sending invoices to clients easier. Its purpose was to write out any fee items for a specific case from its database into a Microsoft Word Document, inserting the relevant title page(s) and working out where Word would place page breaks so that it could then output correct subtotals at the start and end of each page. It also included totals at the end and had a simple interface so that it was possible to enter fee items without worrying about formatting constraints.- The third was a tool for the IT department, intended to make the management of the company's internal databases easier by providing a simple interface to update related tables without the user having to worry about remembering exactly where updates had to take place.
