Katja Kivinen is a renowned academic figure in the life sciences sector with over 20 years of experience in the field. Her expertise in genetics and bioinformatics has led her to lead several large-scale human genotype and sequencing projects all around the world. Not only has she been a principal investigator in various research studies, but she has also managed laboratories and supervised staff and students.

Kivinen has been integral as a founding member of two preeclampsia consortia and a member of the MalariaGEN consortium. These affiliations not only present her competence in the field, but they also showcase her dedication in ensuring that the next generation is equipped to take up the mantle in scientific research.

Kivinen has published over 40 papers and has a strong background in genetics, programming, and laboratory work, which has allowed her to create fruitful interactions between experimental and computational teams. She graduated with a PhD in Bioinformatics and Genetics from the University of Cambridge and earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Genetics, Biology, and Chemistry from the University of Helsinki.

Currently, Kivinen works as the HiLIFE deputy director (research infrastructures) at the University of Helsinki. Previously, she also held positions such as Research Director, Board Member & Investigator, and Cambridge Cardiovascular Research Centres Manager at various academic institutions, including the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and European Bioinformatics Institute.
