The Asian business has revenues of ~A$1.0 billion, EBITDA of ~A$125m, ~2,000 employees and operations in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, China and a joint venture in India.  In this role, I lead a team of approximately 200 people across the region encompassing strategic finance & business development, performance reporting & analysis, financial governance & risk management, information technology services and financial shared services.

Key achievements include:
-  Developing the new Asian strategy encompassing strategy, leadership, culture and organisation structure
-  Delivering an EBIT improvement of over A$135m in the first year of the turn-around and achieving the best ever EBIT performance for the business unit
-  Total restructure of business unit cost base delivering a step-change A$47m cost reduction
-  Delivering a standardised ERP platform with re-engineered business processes and a consolidated a shared financial services centre in Kuala Lumpur
-  Restructuring of key support functions including Finance, HR, Procurement, IS, Supply Chain, Marketing and HSE to leverage best practice regionally, improve governance and reduce costs

BlueScope Steel

Chief Financial Officer, Asia

Responsible for directing, leading and managing BlueScope’s key commercial activities including mergers and acquisitions, divestments, major alliances/joint ventures, major capital expenditure and other significant corporate finance matters across the company’s operations in Australia, New Zealand, Asia and North America. Director of BlueScope Steel (Finance) Limited, BlueScope’s main financing and funding entity and a member of the Finance Leadership Team.

-   A$700m acquisition of Smorgon Distribution as part of a “hostile” takeover transaction with OneSteel and Smorgon Steel
-   Smorgon Distribution synergies of A$15-20m EBIT per annum and budget achieved
-   A$320m successful on-market share raid to acquire 19.9% of Smorgon Steel Limited and block OneSteel’s proposed takeover of Smorgon Steel
-   A$440m sale of the 19.9% Smorgon Steel stake to OneSteel resulted in a ~A$120m profit and reduced the effective acquisition price to ~A$580m.
-   US$730m acquisition of IMSA Steel Corporation from Ternium S.A
-   IMSA North America synergies of A$40m EBIT per annum delivered
-   US$190 million sale of The Vistawall Group to Oldcastle Glass, a subsidiary of CRH plc
-   NZ$250m sale of the Taharoa Iron Sands business to Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings Ltd (NZ OIO approval not granted)
-   A$365m joint venture with Tata Steel to provide steel based building solutions to the Indian construction industry
