After almost 8 years of leading startup engineering teams, I took a bit of a break. I spent about a year doing nothing (which was awesome) and then 18 months doing part time engineering consulting mostly focused on management and leadership.

Took over a fledgling engineering team of quality engineers who needed senior leadership in order to reach their full potential. Instituted significant changes in how the product was architected, built & hosted and recruited a team of software engineers to bring the Hometeam vision to life. As a member of the executive team I helped set corporate strategy for the company as a whole.

As the company's first employee, I made core engineering choices to form the technical foundation of the company, wrote the initial version of most server side code myself, staffed the engineering team, and managed the organization as it grew to nearly 100 people. Grew the service from thousands of users running on a single machine to 10s of millions running on hundreds of machines across AWS and our own hardware. As a member of the executive team I helped set top level strategy for the company as a whole.

I worked on many things: A very early version of Google Checkout, Dodgeball, the database layer of AdWords/AdSense, various aspects of a display add platform, GXP, and an early version of the scripting platform for Google Docs.

Mainly I wrote drivers to configure port forwarding functionality through the HTTP interfaces of crappy home routers.  I did a few other random things as well.Pure Networks was acquired by Cisco many years after I left.

I worked on the Networked File Systems team for Windows NT. I did a lot of debugging in assembly and added a few features to bring the NFS up to parity with local storage.
