- Client was receiving complaints from users regarding unacceptable performance in numerous areas of existing application portfolio. Issues were escalated and tensions high. Objective was to identify and remediate performance issues as part of more thorough technical QA of the application components and engineering processes.
- Recruited another application architect, assessed the application, and provided recommendations to client.
- Received approval to execute a subset of recommendations, mobilized team of ten, and refactored code to remediate performance issues. Integrated paging to reduce payloads of large data sets. Agile delivery methodology used to incrementally accelerate speed to value from user's perspective.

- Tasked with discovery and architectural analysis of an extensive portfolio of 4,500+ client applications. Primary objective was to accelerate driving workloads to Azure while taking advantage of opportunities to optimize applications with managed cost-effective cloud services to reduce cores and fast track time to value.
- Collaborated continuously with client business stakeholders to understand evolving data center strategies, approved technologies and versions, and general changes in priorities driving application waves into intake funnel.
- Created repeatable industrialized processes to increase throughput velocity and speed to disposition, including automation where possible, standard workflows, mobilization and discovery templates, client-centric application discovery questionnaires, RAID tracking and issue escalations, and Azure DevOps entities for tracking and reporting.

Cloud Transformation Architect

Project: Cloud Transformation - Foundational Architecture and Pilot Application Migrations

- Partnered with Microsoft to engage client, establish cloud foundation, and mobilize for multi-year migration of workloads to Azure. 7,500 applications initially in scope. Client strategy was to realize savings by reducing internally hosted cores, accomplished by vacating data centers and optimizing and modernizing workloads across a multi-cloud landscape.
- As lead Avanade architect, drove mobilization tasks, managed Avanade resources, provided oversight to several workstreams.
- Cloud Foundations. Mobilized and led team of Avanade architects to pair with peer architects on the Microsoft team, with the objective of establishing a foundation to provide guidance, accelerate, and mitigate risk of migrating applications to Azure. The team was responsible for discovery and creation of architectural patterns in alignment with client policies and guiding principles, covering areas such as compute, images and SKUs, storage, networking, security, identity, data, monitoring, governance, subscription strategy, naming conventions, ingress/egress, backup, disaster recovery, jump servers, release management, etc.
- Migration Factories. Mobilized and managed team of senior level Avanade architects to provide oversight to globally distributed migration "factories" that began vetting the patterns and processes from the foundations team in actual application migrations. Managing these workstreams involved high levels of collaboration, coordination, ambiguity, escalations, and patience.
- Application Intake. Using experience from previous smaller cloud transformations, collaborated with Microsoft to cross pollenate assets and offerings for best of breed approach to rationalizing and dispositioning such a large number of applications. Project: Cloud Migration - SQL Server Workloads

- Client needed assistance remediating HW/SW end-of-life issues related to legacy database implementations of SQL Server 2000 on Windows Server 2003. Objective was to modernize and migrate the workloads to an internal private cloud platform that provided IaaS services. Target SQL Server version was 2012.
- Successfully mobilized and led distributed team to select and implement tools to automate and accelerate the analysis per Microsoft guidance and prescribed upgrade paths, identify and determine how to deal with required remediations such as deprecated features, data types, and query syntax, and execute the upgrade and migration of database objects, logic, and data, culminating in successful side-by-side validation.

Project: Combine Multiple Complex Versioned Application Code Branches

- Client was incurring significant maintenance and operational costs emanating from complex code branches that evolved in isolation to meet requirements of individual customers. Struggling attempts to merge some branches were in progress when Accenture was asked to perform a more thorough analysis as input to planning and budgeting processes.
- As solution architect, was inserted into situation when tensions were high, and took ownership of two workstreams 1) oversee ongoing branch merge teams and deliverables, and 2) perform detailed analysis of potential branch merge scope and deliver roadmap, effort estimate, risk assessment, remediation team structure, and timeline.
- Successfully kept existing deliveries on schedule, and proposed numerous branch merge solutions, adapting to evolving business priorities and decisions. Each iteration was presented to client in a venue that can be described as similar to orals. Rolled off to engage in next project after delivery commitments were met, and while negotiations were in progress for the next phase of branch merging.

- Client was operating at high risk with one subject matter expert (SME) owning maintenance and operation of the company's fragile legacy line-of-business solution that was a conglomeration of procedural BASIC, Excel, VBA, ASCII files, and Access. SME was preparing for retirement. Objective was to modernize the solution to remediate risk and enable onboarding of resources with modern skills. Target platform was Azure for US Government.
- As cloud transformation architect, orchestrated and conducted workshops with the SME and business stakeholders to understand the legacy solution components and functions, business strategy and vision, and existing in-house skills.
- Working bottom up, mobilized team of technical consultants and analysts to engage in the arduous task of documenting in detail the solution's architecture, inputs, logic, workflows, dependencies, and outputs.
- Translated input from above exercises into a cloud modernization strategy that aligned with the client's needs and enabled savings from PaaS. - Client was investing in modernization of a legacy airline reservations and operations system from HP3000/COBOL/TurboImage to a highly-available n-tier distributed application architecture based on a modern Microsoft technology stack.
- As developer and architect, contributed and a variety of workstreams and led globally distributed teams using waterfall and agile methodologies.
- Highlights include design of a multi-threaded application architecture to improve efficiency of overnight batch processing that was impacting customer operations by not completing on schedule, and architecting an innovative API gateway to provide versioning, backward compatibility, technology interop support, routing, and aggregation of domain web services contracts, reducing the number of end points and contracts external consumers needed to manage. The aggregation component which combined WSDLs was designed to integrate into the automated build process. Also created system to display arrivals and departures in airports.
- The delivery received the Avanade Gold Regional Delivery Excellence Recognition award and was also the Overall Achievement Area Winners in 2005.

Modernized legacy web-based magazine subscription application that facilitated execution of email campaigns. Responsible for design and implementation of campaign questionnaire component. Created internal-facing web-based solution that allowed users to create external-facing web-based questionnaires which supported custom questions and responses, common HTML UI controls, field validation, column-wise and row-wise ordering of responses, versioning, and session state across a server farm. The forms were stored as XML in SQL Server and translated to HTML on-demand by a very complex XSL transform. Owned all database-related scope and responsibilities. Migrated data to SQL Server using DTS. Created stored procedures used for both the questionnaire application and campaign component transactions. Responsible for creative design and built wire-frame prototypes of new look-and-feel that were approved by the client.
