Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence

I started a program at a local library that teaches under-represented minority elementary and middle school students about the world of STEM. Each session, I facilitate activities such as engineering challenges and Arduino projects with 10-15 kids each session. This activity allows me to be the persona that I wish I knew when I was a boy. Coming into high school, I did not see many African-Americans in the STEM field, so I thought that it was impossible to break into. Over time, I began to see the possibility as more plausible and became excited by the prospects of entering an area that I had not seen before. I would like to give this realization to the generation after me as soon as possible.

For one month each summer, Colorado's best and brightest students, chosen from a competitive pool of applicants by current industry leaders and well-respected individuals in the state of Colorado, live and study on the campus of the University of Denver and earn three hours of college credit. Students choose one of two majors: International Social Studies or STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math), the degree I chose, and explore diverse topics through a lecture series by university professors and 3 hands-on projects--Colorado Social Problem Lab, Short-Term Business Lab, and National History Day.

I had the opportunity to spend time at various well-known aerospace companies where I had a chance to meet the best and the brightest in industry and participate in hands-on activities. I went to companies such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Raytheon. I learned what aerospace engineers do on a daily basis through shadowing and helping with tasks.
