The company was supportive and interested in keeping the people who worked there the focus. Although this was this first time I did not have some kind of management capacity to my role I quickly established myself as a leader who could produce results and have everyone leave feeling happy and positive; a task that is not easy in an environment that is so demanding.

After years of experience I leveraged my skills in rigging into a freelance business in the live production industry. I have worked across North America developing connections through a variety of environments and cities as well as being the head of rigging for one of the last remaining classically design "hemp" stage rigging systems in Canada. This has been an opportunity to provide variety and learning as both a crew leader and in roles responsible for signing off on insurance, safety of assets and in a number of cases the safety of human performers. The challenge of 23 flights, 8 cities, 7 road trips in 5 months while acquiring certifications for a new business and supporting a family back home has given me the confidence to say to clients if you want change, go get it.

As a long time sales associate in the ski and bike industry I now work as a ski boot fitter and winter sales associate. The challenge of providing good ongoing care in a small town requires building relationships and providing honest, trustworthy service. I take pride and enjoyment from my work in the community, a product of which I see at the ski hill and around town. Throughout all of my business ventures and career I have maintained a sales position, temporary or long-term, out of the pure enjoyment and passion for the adventure sport world and interacting with like-minded people. Selling skis and bikes is about more than equipment; it's about giving clients access to enjoyment and a lifestyle that can provide fulfillment in their lives.

After working for a large company, I went to work for a decidedly smaller company with a more family feel. Although the work was similar, while working with Arbutus Tree Service I was again able to see how work place well-being was affected by its leader. Here, I was able to witness first-hand how a leader who cared more for the people than the bottom line could grow and develop a company and inspire creative and loyal employees.  After hearing of my success here I was able to attract two more employees who stayed on for many years, one of which is currently still employed with Arbutus. I was proud to be an employee and was sad to leave when my wife decided to pursue a new career path.

My career as a motivated and talented Arborist started with BC Plant Health Care. I was able to observe numerous leadership styles as well as try, fail, learn and be supported in my own leadership style as I grew with a company that was rapidly expanding. I was given the opportunity, early in my career, to be a foreman and take charge of numerous large contracts. I quickly became known as a high producer who could also write quality environmental and risk assessment reports for City and private interests as well as help establish tree maintenance protocol in a consulting role for the City of Surrey. I became a certified Arborist, Certified Hazard Tree Risk Assessor and Tree Climber specialist within 1 year, a Process that typically takes 3-5 years.

A major goal of mine was to start a business. Although I started mowing lawn at 11 this was the first official business that I started while in college for horticulture. This provided a good living along with a quick study in finding customers and growing a business in an era where social media was in its infancy. I learned how to manage contracts, estimate job costs and provide exemplary service for our customers. Although this was a short lived business it was very successful. I chose to leave the business to pursue a career as an arborist.

After a short period of time as a top performing sales associate I took over the role of shop manager. In charge of purchasing, organizing, hiring part-time shop staff, and customer service the shop, which was ranked 50th in Canada, within 3 months was ranked 5th in the country for shop sales and performance relative to overall store sales and performance. It would maintain a top 10 ranking until I moved back to Vancouver to earn money for school.
