Senior Lead Software Engineer

Helped train and mentor a key team of engineers for new SOA/Microservice infrastructure. Charter was to develop infrastructure that would honor a consumer’s intent via voice.

Wrote multiple Microservices, predominately around the multi-modal Music domain, security, and routing.
Implemented or setup core infrastructure and pipelines:
- Jenkins server and Jenkins pipeline builds and scripts for CI/CD flow and to build our containers.
- Logging stack and structured logging ingestion.
- AWS: VPC design, load balancer and DNS rules, security groups, key management, etc.
- Setup desired state configuration for AWS stack via Terraform
- Mesos/Marathon for container orchestration, alongside Consul and Chronos
- Docker-Compose -> Infrastructure flow, so development and deployment stories were seamless.
Set up training and on-boarding for the following technologies/practices:
- Docker and Container orchestration/scaling patterns
- Git, Code review guidelines, Definition of Done and TDD
- AWS, HTTP and RESTful services and patterns
- Database patterns (polyglot persistence) – when/where to utilize NoSQL/SQL/Event Sourcing.
- Patterns and anti-patterns: CQRS, ORMs, Post-Redirect-Get flows, MVC, circuit-breakers, randomized/jittered retry logic, queuing, sourcing, etc, and their security or performance impacts.
- Mapping service evolution and bounded contexts, e.g., when and where to share code/DTOs, infrastructure adapters, breaking apart/combining services, and continuous deployment/delivery.
- What makes a good, self-describing and transparent REST API, Swagger, and SLAs
- Template services, roadmap, and implementation order, while advising the POs, QA, and Execs.

Voicebox Technologies Corporation

Architect / Lead SDE

I was asked to join a greenfield project, based on my distributed systems and consumer hardware background, PM experience, years of development, and ability to never need sleep, to help create a new direction for Voicebox, with a multi-user/device, voice-enabled IoT product line with hardware, and mobile/web applications.

There were several goals to the project and I was asked to help...
1. Bring together various teams from around the company to...
2. Make the new product show the best of every department...
3. While trying to implement new or more modern practices, and streamline existing processes...
4. To design and architect a scalable, multi-tenant, voice enabled IoT ecosystem on the consumer front, and helping to prepare the corporate side for dealing with having products with our name on it.
5. Improve offerings to our clients, from features to APIs and documentation.

This led me to champion, pursue, squash, and evangelize, many aspects of a consumer level product with varying levels of success:

-  Security: Hardware tampering detection, backend security and data retention requirements (PII, COPPA, etc).
-  Cradle to Grave: Out of box requirements, first time setup, certifications, to product lifetime and retirement planning.
-  Support, billing, analytics: Captured and defined requirements and features to integrate them with other requirements to help internal staff easily troubleshoot and help future customers and features.
-  Backend: Early architecture and planning of the new cloud microservice (SOA) architecture and initial design and prototyping of product services.
-  Processes: Designed and helped implement processes that shepherded documentation, requirements, and stories, while making clear the go-to person and source of truth at all times.
-  Training/Mentoring, as this was a new direction for the company, much of my time was spent on training and mentoring on new practices, and cloud-oriented development.
-  APIs and component interactions.

System Architect

I have the great pleasure of being an architect on some of the most complex systems I've ever touched in my career.  Designing, researching, coding and leading on infrastructure that tests products that allow humans to talk to computers across dozens of languages.  Unlimited criteria, and almost - quite literally - more potential conversations than stars in the universe (100's of trillions counted before computers started to implode) leads to some fun, hard, and interesting challenges, to say the least.

Software in the human language realm is a big data problem with a lot of nuances, and very little tolerance for error by those who interact with it.  With an awesome team, I get to make sure it works well enough so a child can ask directions to a McDonald's in a car on the freeway going 60 MPH in a wind storm.

I get to play with map/reduce, graphs, 3d programming, NoSQL, SQL, distributed computing, cloud/in-house, reproducible randomness across machines with hundreds of total threads, micro-services, giant-services, medium services, while coding models of AM radio's and researching how the frequency hop is different in other parts of the world.

It's a lot of fun.

Product ideation, PRD and Spec creation at Windermere Realty's technology arm.  Tried to drag a centuries old industry into the modern era, with software that not only helps a Realtor sell property, but to allow families to find the home that is perfect for them.

Used my technical know-how to help increase search engine results (SEO) for properties and wrestled valuable data out of a data warehouse containing millions of properties over the decades to help lead this company to the head of the pack in the Realty industry for the Western United States.

Windermere Solutions

Product Manager

Planned and brought to successful completion multiple features across various products.  Used technical knowledge and expertise to communicate effectively and efficiently with Operations, Dev and Test to navigate past the various hurdles that come up during software development and launched multiple public facing websites for Windermere Realty.

Technical Project Manager

Designed, created and maintained various tools to help speed up the QA team, increase accuracy of bugs and to help provide the relevant details necessary to allow the Dev team to quickly and correctly make a better product.

Designed, created and maintained the first automation system that utilized the Kinect, Microsoft's motion sensing game device for the Xbox 360, to allow testing beyond the physical capabilities of the human body.

Trained current and incoming new-hires on processes, internal tools, and best techniques.

Personally responsible for the quality of all the above, alongside: Two major game play modes, security, XLSP, Save/Load, I/O, Menus, and a large portion of the accompanying Facebook application.

Kinect Sports has gone on to sell an estimated ~5 million copies and has even won a Guiness Book of World Records award.

Build Engineer and Automation on Shadowrun, a Vista and Xbox 360 game released by Microsoft in 2007.

Maintained and developed code which built the project and various tools, per request.  The build system is still used, and is fully scalable.

I wrote single/multiplayer automation and the automation harness, that allowed an unlimited amount of PC's or Xbox 360's to put the project through the loops.  This saved hundreds of hours of test time with the real testers, which were able to do the things that humans are good at.
