The world runs on open source software, but this ecosystem is not sustainable. The Maintainerati Foundation is dedicated to making the open source software ecosystem sustainable and healthy, by improving the lives of open source maintainers. We operate a global series of events designed to help us clearly understand the challenges that maintainers face, and then work to craft solutions at the institutional level, rather than the individual level.

As a founding board member of the Foundation, along with the rest of the board I manage the strategy and vision of the Foundation, and oversee the events we run, from inception to execution. I also assist in analysing the knowledge we gather into actionable post-event reports.

Maintainerati Foundation

As part of the developer relations team, I've worn many hats, and been responsible for a range of projects and programs, in addition to the usual sorts of advocacy activity.

-  Primary responsible person for open source maintainer-oriented content at GitHub Universe, one of the most exciting developer gatherings in San Francisco. Responsibilities include curating talks both invited and from an open CFP, creating compelling panels, and crafting a range of auxiliary activities designed to help make maintainers more effective.
-  Created and ran a global series of workshops designed to get developers working with the GitHub API in under two hours.
-  Built and ran an internal advocacy program designed to empower GitHub employees to speak at conferences on behalf of GitHub, effectively scaling developer relations reach
-  Created open source maintainer-focused programming for GitHub Satellite and GitHub Universe, including talk selection, assembling panels and workshops, creating auxiliary events for maintainers, and crafting the marketing strategy for maintainers.

Developer Advocate

I built the developer relations and brand marketing efforts at Sqreen.

My primary focus was increasing awareness of the Sqreen brand and product among developers, to foster a sense of security-consciousness among developers more broadly, to build grassroots interest in not only deploying Sqreen, but to improve the security practices within tech companies generally.

To achieve this goal, I worked in several areas simultaneously.

First, I managed (and contributed to) the production of technical content for our engineering blog, and other blogs and media outlets, as well as conference talks and presentations. I encouraged Sqreen's employees to share their expertise and their passion with their communities, to show the world how awesome they are, and helped them shape engaging narratives around their passion.

Second, I maintained our event tactics and strategy. I decided which events would be fruitful to attend given our focus on developer awareness, as well as oversaw event sponsorship and participation, booth design, developer outreach activities, and swag design and production.

Third, I had charge over Sqreen's brand. I directed our rebranding effort, focused on making the brand more attractive to developers, and (more importantly) to create a coherent framework for Sqreen's written and visual styles.

In my time on the DevRel team, I helped guide and build the Developer Relations team at Slack. As one of the first on the team, I helped determine our strategic direction, and in particular our team's strategy around tool-building and workshops. I built and led the Developer Tools team, which is focused on creating tools and experiences that remove roadblocks from getting started building great Slack apps and bots—anything that will help grow the base of active developers building successful apps.

I also engaged actively in developer advocacy, giving our developer platform a human face. My goal was to help developers building on the Slack platform succeed at a technical and product level through documentation, talks, and plain old face-to-face meeting, and to advocate for our developers internally, representing their needs and wants to Slack's platform engineering and product team.

While on the engineering team at Slack, I worked on nearly every part of the technology stack. Helped build the Slack App Directory and was tech lead for Sign in with Slack. I single-handedly architected, designed and kicked-off a cross-platform mobile library in C++ to make our mobile devs' lives easier. I started my career at Slack integrating Screenhero's real-time communications platform directly into the Slack Mac and Windows desktop apps using V8, XPC, and portable C++.

I have worked on everything from meddling with mice and USB streams at the kernel level in C, to responsive single-page web apps in JS and Ruby, to business finance, business development, and marketing. As the first employee at this early-stage startup, I had to wear many hats, and be ready to quickly respond to changing needs in a fluid environment.

In addition to operating and growing the business, I designed, tested, manufactured, marketed, sold, and shipped custom electronics for model railroad applications. When not working on my own products, I also engaged in OEM design consulting for a number of external clients working within the model railroading industry. Designed and ran experiments to determine the effectiveness of genetic algo- rithms for parameter estimation of USDA cotton growth models. Authored a set of C++ and Python libraries implementing canonical genetic algorithm.

As intern, collaborated to design, and develop first-to-market “machine-to-machine” automatic sensor data logging using existing wireless pager network. Designed and developed Windows-based server in C and C++ to communicate with sensors over pager network, and log and analyze sensor data stream.

Developed in Tcl/Tk an interactive computer simulation display software for an interactive kiosk at the Smithsonian Institute called “How Wings Work” that demonstrates the basic principles of flight. Authored touch-screen driver for XFree86.
