Basmah Safdar, an eminent clinical scholar in sex and gender-specific research with a focus on cardiovascular health in emergency care, has achieved a significant milestone in the field of women’s health. She has completed her residency training in Emergency Medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital where she served as Chief Resident from 2003-2004. Dr. Safdar is renowned for publishing extensively on gender-specific research in cardiovascular care and delivering keynote speeches at regional and national forums on this topic.

Dr. Safdar’s administrative and research role focuses on women’s health, especially addressing gender disparities in microvascular dysfunction in a multi-system model. She served as the Medical Director of the Yale New Haven Hospital Women’s Heart Program from 2008 to 2013. This is a comprehensive community awareness program that endeavors to improve women’s knowledge about heart disease. In her current position as Director of the Emergency Department Chest Pain Center at Yale, she is responsible for implementing new models of care focused on reducing length of stay, costs and recidivism while maintaining quality.

In her latest contribution to the field, Dr. Safdar led the first emergency department randomized clinical trial in the US, treating microvascular disease in undifferentiated emergency department chest pain patients. Apart from her clinical and research inclination, Dr. Safdar is a champion of equity in the workplace, advocating for the advancement of women in medicine. She happily serves as a mentor for undergraduate students, medical students, residents, and faculty. As a testament to her commitment to this cause, she served as the Past-President of Academy for Women in Academic Emergency Medicine (AWAEM).
