Victor Yang FRCSC MASc MD PhD PEng

Dr. Victor Yang FRCSC MASc MD PhD PEng is an accomplished neurosurgeon, researcher, and educator with a diverse educational background in Engineering, Medicine, and Medical Biophysics. His expertise lies in neurosurgery, interventional neuroradiology, optical coherence tomography, and medical device design. Dr. Yang received his Honors BASc in Engineering Science with a Biomedical option from the University of Toronto and pursued further studies in Electrical and Computer Engineering, ultimately completing his MD-PhD, specializing in Medical Biophysics. His research focuses on Doppler optical coherence tomography and designing innovative medical devices. With a Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Bioengineering and Biophotonics, Dr. Yang is currently an associate professor at the Division of Neurosurgery, University of Toronto, and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ryerson University. He has garnered prestigious awards, including the Governor General's Gold Medal for outstanding PhD work. Dr. Yang is also a certified neurosurgeon and a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.

With a keen interest in high precision surgical navigation and interventional neuroradiology, Dr. Victor Yang's clinical practice complements his groundbreaking research in neurosurgery. Throughout his career, he has contributed significantly to the fields of intra-operative fluorescence imaging, photodynamic therapy, and the development of micro-machined electro-mechanical probes and catheters. His expertise extends to artificial muscle technology, surgical simulation, and medical signal/image processing. Dr. Yang has a rich history of involvement in renowned organizations such as Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where he serves as a Neurosurgeon and Senior Scientist. He has held academic positions at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University, as well as a status appointment at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the University of Toronto. Additionally, he has been associated with Colibri Technologies Inc. as a Co-Inventor and has contributed to impactful research at University Health Network and St. Michael's Hospital.
