Mark Shaffrey
Dr. Mark Edwin Shaffrey is a distinguished neurosurgeon with a rich academic background and extensive experience in the field. He graduated magna cum laude from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Biochemistry and Biology in 1983, followed by earning his MD from the University of Virginia in 1987, where he was elected to AOA. Dr. Shaffrey completed his surgical internship in 1988 and went on to complete his neurosurgical training at the University of Virginia in 1994. His impressive training includes an NIH postdoctoral fellowship in microvascular physiology and a clinical neuropathology fellowship. He also pursued specialized training as a skull base surgery fellow in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and as a neurosurgical registrar in Plymouth, England. After fulfilling a scholarship obligation to the USAF, where he served as the Chief of Neurosurgery at Keesler Medical Center and received the Meritorious Service Medal, Dr. Shaffrey returned to the University of Virginia to establish the Neuro-Oncology Center and the Neurosurgery Clinical Trials Office in 1997. He has made significant contributions to the field of neurosurgery and academia, earning multiple awards and accolades throughout his career.
