Nicholas Theodore

Dr. Nicholas Theodore is a distinguished neurosurgeon and orthopedic surgeon holding the Donlin M. Long Professorship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

With extensive experience, he leads the Neurological Spine Program and the Complex Spine Fellowship Program while serving as Co-Director of the Carnegie Center for Surgical Innovation.

Dr. Theodore completed his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine and his undergraduate studies at Cornell University.

He underwent specialized training in neurosurgical residency and spinal surgery fellowship at the prestigious Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) under renowned mentors Dr. Robert Spetzler and Dr. Volker Sonntag.

Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Theodore held leadership roles including Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at Naval Medical Center San Diego and various positions at the BNI.

His expertise spans brain and spinal cord injury, minimally invasive surgery, robotics, and personalized medicine, showcasing his commitment to advancing patient care.

A prolific author with over 200 scientific publications, Dr. Theodore has received numerous research awards such as the Tasker, Mayfield, and NASS Awards.

Recognized for his contributions, he has been granted multiple RO-1 grants by the NIH and garnered a notable award from the Department of Defense for his research on acute spinal cord injury.

In addition to his academic endeavors, Dr. Theodore co-founded Excelsius Surgical, an image-guided robotics company, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit and innovation in healthcare technology.

He has also been actively involved in injury prevention and advocacy, notably serving as National President of the Board of Directors of ThinkFirst.
