In 2007 I published my first book, “You Call the Shots,” a memoir of 19-year-old wondering entrepreneur Cameron Johnson, followed by “The Go-Giver” with Bob Burg, which has since sod nearly a million copies in thirty languages and earned multiple awards. Thirty books later, I'm still writing.

In March 1986 I published a tiny regional newsletter, reporting on nutritional and environmental issues. I copyset the first few issues on my Kaypro computer, cut the printed columns into strips and pasted them down onto boards. (Old-school, baby!) Picked up bounds stacks of the newspaper and delivered them in my station wagon to area stores. Later that year I got my first Macintosh (a Mac Plus, total RAM: 1 megabyte). By 1990 it was a 90-page magazine with national circulation.

In 1971, at age 17, I helped found this alternative high school, which was directed (in its earlier years) by novelist and educator Julian F. Thompson, and went on to send its graduates to such places as Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. After starting it, I was a member of the first year student body, and after graduating joined the faculty.

When I was 13 my mother, who was leading a group of schoolchildren on a trip to Greece to perform Aeschyus’s “Prometheus Bound” at the amphitheater at Epidaurus, decided she wanted to eight of the choruses set to music — which she promptly asked me to compose. “But I'm 13,” I said, “I can't do that!” She replied, “Sure you can.” So I did. We performed it that year, and I went on to a career as an award-winning composer.
