Restorative Leadership Institute (RLI) is a certified B Corp sustainability consulting firm that received 2016 and 2013 “Best For The World” awards for impact among certified B Corps globally.  I will be working with RLI's CEO, Dr. Sean Steffen, to create a book resource that offers case and place-based insights to bridge theory and practice for fulfilling the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and Climate Change Treaty targets.  The book will be titled Unprecedented Possibility: Leading For A Sustainable Future and will be published by Emerald Press. I'm excited to be part of this effort to identify innovative theories and best practices to inform the collective interests and needs of communities leading for a sustainable future around the world.

I worked with the University of Hawaii Community College (UHCC) system to develop an entrepreneurial accelerator across the state for all community college students, alumni, faculty and staff and named it the Raising Entrepreneurial Ventures (REV) Program. This program is aimed at providing a hands-on mentorship style on-line program curriculum to drive startups and business ideas to market. The program also provides a jumpstart for entrepreneurs to rise through the local Hawaii Innovation and Startup pipeline.  The first cohort completed the program in 2016 with an event celebration with innovation ecosystem leaders from across Hawaii's accelerators, government agencies and academia.  This non-credit Program was then developed into a for-credit class for the seven-campus college system.

This BMW Foundation funded research aimed to understand the mechanisms, best practices, and challenges of a global network of social enterprises.  This understanding is necessary to create coherence across the network to unify local governance structures in operationalizing the global brand.    Using methodology honed in my PhD research I interviewed Impact Hub leaders from around the world to articulate best practices, pain points, guiding principles and solutions for Impact Hub local and global corporate governance.

Nu House offered a fresh perspective on low-impact sustainable living in Hawaii.  This startup company brought together cutting-edge smart home technology, elegant design, and quality sustainable materials for smart eco-living.  I helped support the founding CEO in all areas of business development for the company.

The goal of this program was to explore providing $10 Million in free lighting retrofits to small and medium size businesses and organization on Oahu in one year.  Dozens of business leaders were interviewed to discuss the fit of this program and recommendations were provided to expand the impact of this national approach in the local context.

In the Fall of 2015, Hawaii passed legislation to address Oahu’s housing crisis. The new law permits small homes called Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) to be built on existing lots and rented long term. Hawaii ADU was created to provide a one-stop-shop for becoming educated and empowered when entering the ADU market.  In the role of Busines Development Officer I supported the executive team to develop and implement the business model including providing free pre-checks to ensure each lot qualifies, free education events, connections with financing, financial modelling, and the sales strategy to sell ADU models called Ohana Kits designed by our local Founder.   I also performed nation-wide market research to map the ADU ecosystem and policy/conditions to identify growth markets and build a national roll-out strategy and financial plan and financial planning tool.

The mission of ProtoHUB Honolulu was to co-create a community center for change-makers with spaces for co-working, events, and programs that cultivate a culture of collaboration, live-work balance, and sustainability and support Hawaii's innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystem.ProtoHUB Honolulu was the first step to becoming Impact HUB Honolulu as we prototyped hours, price plans, members services and programs to see what best serves the community needs.  ProtoHUB was a 5000 square foot space that served students, non-profits, new businesses, established leaders, young entrepreneurs, artists, free-lancers...pretty much anyone who might go to a coffee shop and work...but would like a bit more out of the experience, like community, clients, and a supportive professional network. Our nine-member team represented engineering, education, project management, business development, and health care.  Together we created unique sustainability education and training programs that evolve institutional cultures to embrace and create change.  We also performed tailored engineering assessments that help organizations measure the sustainability of their water, waste and energy systems.  As the only independent sustainability focused engineering consulting firm in the State of Hawaii, we also worked closely with architecture firms on many aspects of sustainable design.  Our clients included the Department of Education, The Hawaii State Department of Defense, Johnson Controls, SAIC, and many private schools and community based organizations.  No longer located in Hawaii, I currently consult individually on diverse projects globally.

Smart Sustainability Consulting LLC

Consultant to Johnson Controls to design and implement the Educational Component to accompany their Energy Performance Contract with the Oahu University of Hawaii Community Colleges (UHCC).  The partnership between Johnson Controls and UHCC is estimated to save the four Oahu campuses $58M over 20 years.  The goal of the Educational Component is to ensure the campus communities are engaged in learning and participation throughout the process.  The Educational Component has included the design of five course in sustainability, energy auditing, water, food, and integrated renewable energy planning; four Renewable Energy Training Summits selling out to industry and campus participant; a student Fellowship Program with interdisciplinary multi-campus student leaders; student energy audit training; and a Live Simple viral student engagement campaign.

I taught a capstone course in the Political Science and Honors departments on internships and career readiness in the fields of government, policy, and sustainability.  I also designed curriculum outlining seven core concepts of sustainability that were integrated across the ten-campus system such that any professor using three of the core concepts could earn an 'S' designation (standing for sustainability) for their course.  Students accruing three courses with 'S' designations will soon be able to earn a minor in Sustainability.  I am working with the UH system to create a similar system for entrepreneurship with an 'E' designation for qualifying courses.

I created this program to provide paid work opportunities for students seeking green careers and to grow Hawaiʻi’s green economy by pairing young professionals with innovative sustainable development projects that align with their interests. Sustainability fellows are individually placed at private, public and non-profit partner sites where they receive technical training through office and/or field experience as well as mentorship. They earn competitive pay for their work and participate in professional development workshops which provide time for fellows to connect with their peers and green thought leaders from the local community.
