I worked at Maplin Electronics during my four months working in Ireland on the USIT work abroad program. While working at Maplin, I became familiar with the technical differences between the United States and Europe in many of the electronic systems such as broadcast and satellite television, phone and broadband service, and electrical specifications. I also learned how to interact and help people from different cultures and backgrounds in an unfamiliar environment. This experience has helped me gain a better perspective for how to meet the needs, both technical and personal, of the consumers in our global technology market.

I worked on a web application in php, javascript, MySQL, and XHTML with a couple of professors for a small start-up. I helped design and code a beta version of a web application including recommending features, choosing development methods, and implementing the design.

During this internship I designed and implemented a web-based scheduling application for scheduling of student employees. I worked with managers to determine which features were needed in the application, and which features were a priority for implementation. I also collaborated with student employees to determine which features they would like implemented in the application. I then implemented the design using php, html, xml, css, and javascript to meet the specifications under a strict timeline. I also performed application testing to ensure it would perform under real world conditions.

Web Application Development Internship

In this position I managed and worked with a team of 5 - 8 people responsible with providing technical support to 17 open access and classroom computer rooms. I was responsible for troubleshooting hardware, software, and network problems to ensure minimal downtime. I was responsible for creating and maintaining internal web applications vital to the department, utilizing html, css, coldfusion, javascript, and sql. In addition, I was involved with Interviewing, hiring, training, and scheduling student staff to ensure support staff is available at all times. Finally, I was responsible for coordinating projects including computer installations, web application development, and lab cleaning between different department heads, and staff to ensure all needs are met.

As a student event manager I supervised crews of 30+ people during event setups, often under specific time constraints. I had to exercise extensive multi-tasking and prioritizing skills through event management. I was responsible for managing student staff and maintaining client contact during events, such as guest lecturers, concerts, and fine arts performances.
