Matthias Gafni is an award-winning journalist with extensive experience in breaking news, investigative reporting, and feature writing. He studied high school at Redwood High School and received his Bachelor's degree in English/Communications from the University of California, Davis. Gafni has a diverse reporting coverage, including business, politics, crime, education, and general assignments.

Gafni's achievements include a 2019 SPJ Sigma Delta Chi Award for non-deadline reporting for digital, being a 2019 Pulitzer Prize finalist for Breaking News with Chico Enterprise-Record & Bay Area News Group, and winning the prestigious 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News with East Bay Times. He has also won the 2018 SPJ Norcal Reporter of the Year, the 2018 EPPY for the Best Investigative/Enterprise Feature for website w/ more than 1 million unique monthly visitors, the 2017 Scripps Howard Award for Breaking News, the 2017 American Society of Editors for Breaking News, and the 2017 Best of the West for News Writing and Short Feature, in addition to multiple SPJ and Freedom of Information awards.

Gafni has multi-media experience, including podcasts, audio slideshows, videos, and niche products such as creating a young-adult tabloid and website. He also started and maintained the paper's first internship program and is skilled in web content, copy editing, budgeting, editing, features, press releases, stories, technical writing, and web site production. His list of sources is broad, including other reporters, and he is adept at working on tight deadlines, learning subjects on the fly, and finishing projects in a timely and coordinated fashion.

Currently, Gafni is an enterprise reporter at San Francisco Chronicle and SFGATE, where he continues to produce award-winning journalism. Prior to this, he worked as an investigative reporter at Bay Area News Group, a Communications specialist at AMF Media Group, a reporter at Contra Costa Times, a Sunday Editor at Contra Costa Times, an Assistant City Editor/General Assignment Reporter at Vallejo Times-Herald, and the Editor-in-Chief at California Aggie.
