Starting from West Virginia, where he moved as a young back-to-the-lander, Bill has built his career on crafting expressive and emotional human figures. Hopen's work is not limited to public spaces as he also creates intimate figurative works suitable for both interior and garden spaces. He devotes half of his time to producing these smaller sculptures, which are often purchased for private and museum collections. Bill's professional experience and expertise are centered around bronze figurative sculptures, liturgical work, portraits, expressive figures, smaller sculpture editions, sculptures for gardens, fountains, and architectural settings. He Studied at City University of New York-Herbert H. Lehman College, where he gained in-depth knowledge of sculpture. He currently runs Bill Hopen, sculptor studio while working closely with his wife and fellow sculptor, Ai Qiu, and artisan assistant Chris Urbanic.
