Principal, and International Development Practice Lead

Served as Chief of Party one of the most successful and admired teams in the development sector.  Helped build, nurture and lead the LEARN contract through its formation and evolution into a high-functioning, collaborative, innovative and customer-focused team that more than tripled in size from its original 10 staff.  By building trust with our clients to deliver high-quality results, we saw our funding grow from less than $4M in our first year to more than $10M in our fourth year.  During that time, we helped the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to become “a better Learning Organization” and developed a practical approach of self-assessment, action-planning, and process integration to help move towards that Agency vision. Our ultimate goal was to improve the effectiveness of USAID programs and increase the sustainability of its development outcomes. In less than four years, we helped the agency move from the concept of developing intentional, systematic, and resourced approaches to Collaborating, Learning, and Adapting (CLA) to having worked with more than 60 USAID missions around the world through direct technical assistance, capacity building, facilitation, and case documentation. Chief of Party, USAID Knowledge Management and Learning (LEARN) Contract

Served on the leadership team of this 10,000-person international NGO, dedicated to reducing poverty, strengthening food security, improving nutrition and health, and sustainably managing natural resources. Provided leadership, strategy, and guidance for the CGIAR Consortium, its 15 member Research Centers, and its 16 global Research Programs. Coordinated with knowledge managers, communicators, and ICT professionals across the Consortium to help provide improved knowledge capture, organization, and access; improved internal and external communication; and more systematic and cost-effective ICT approaches to support CGIAR's mission.  Significant achievements include leading the development of CGIAR’s Open Access and Open Data policy; helping establish the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) partnership; and conceiving and planning CGIAR’s first “Development Dialogues” summit to support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals discussions.

Director of Knowledge Management & Communication

Promoted to take on overall implementation and management of the Knowledge for Health (K4Health) Project, a global 5-year USAID-funded effort designed to improve access to, and use of, health information collected, synthesized, and made available in a variety of formats. The ultimate goal of the project was to help contribute to an improvement in health outcomes as a result of better access to health information.   As a member of the Leadership Group of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, Center for Communication Programs (JHU∙CCP) which implemented the K4Health project, participated in the development of the overall strategic direction of the Center. Other contributions included helping create and grow the Global Health Knowledge Initiative (GHKI) and what became the the Global Digital Health Network.

Project Director/Chief of Party, USAID Knowledge for Health (K4Health) Project; Faculty Associate

Helped turn around a struggling project into a dynamic and innovative platform for sharing global health information and knowledge.   Helped establish and served on the Executive Committee of the Johns Hopkins University Global mHealth Initiative (GmI) Advisory Board, providing strategic direction; speaking to audiences about the initiative and mHealth as requested; and help develop strategic partnerships. In addition to management and leadership, also provided field-based technical support, including ground-breaking efforts in Bangladesh, South Africa, and Malawi.

Deputy Project Director, USAID Knowledge for Health (K4Health) Project

Helped lead a staff of more than 20 communications and knowledge exchange professionals in the U.S. and around the world tasked with improving the way MSH communicated and shared information internally and externally.  Responsibilities included:  managing internal and external knowledge management strategies, projects and platforms; overseeing global capacity-building operations; coordinating content, learning, and technology for monthly global capacity building sessions and live quarterly global staff meetings across 30+ countries; developing and promoting MSH’s mobile health (mHealth) capabilities; and contributing knowledge management expertise to MSH projects, as well as to various inter-agency working groups.  Achievements included establishing vibrant sector-specific global communities of practice and piloting a number of ground-breaking mobile technology innovations in the field.

Oversee the operations and growth of the company’s Information Technology (IT) and Knowledge Management (KM) departments, to improve healthcare services for the nation’s senior citizens.   Achievements include:•  Developing a secure, robust knowledge management platform to support project, document and customer relationship management; sales; and internal collaboration and communication. • Managing the conception, development, customization, deployment and adoption of a wide-ranging CRM tool to track and report on sales, projects, contacts, staff, resources and customer support requests.

Vice President, IT and Knowledge Management

Helped develop the company’s KM, product development, and IT strategies and infrastructure.  Specific achievements include: • Helping develop and execute the growth strategy for this consulting firm – creating and formalizing operational, technological, and intellectual property management procedures.• Building from scratch an IT department, infrastructure, and support team capable of supporting 75+ nationally dispersed staff and consultants with communications and solutions.  • Managing the development, marketing, pricing and sales of a new portfolio of technology-based tools for the company’s consultants and health plans nationwide to improve compliance and performance.

Worked with international development experts, governments and industry leaders on competitiveness, strategic planning, business development, marketing and market development, and export generation for USAID contracts.  Specific areas of activity included:• Conducting consulting, reconnaissance and start-up assignments for projects in Armenia, Brazil, Cambodia, Croatia, Germany, Jordan, Moldova, Morocco, Ukraine, Vietnam and West Bank/Gaza.• Leading country missions, managing interface and negotiations with host governments, business leaders, and representatives of bilateral and multilateral development agencies. Trained local and expatriate staff. Provided strategic plans for target industries, together with associated operational systems and tools. •  Industry exposure included tourism, textiles, furniture, home accessories, and agribusiness.  • Conducting reconnaissance, recruiting, and proposal writing that led to more than $100M in contracts.• Served as Acting Chief of Party for the Cambodia Strengthening Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in Cambodia (Cambodia MSMEs) project during start-up.

Worked to improve effectiveness and accountability within the nonprofit sector.  Served on this consulting firm’s senior management team, and provided leadership for the development, management, maintenance, and marketing of its technology tools and resources, as well as overall strategy. Responsibilities included strategic-alliance development, foundation interaction, strategic planning, proposal writing, business development, marketing, technology management, and product development. Achievements including managing the development of a sector-changing suite of online tools to help nonprofits evaluate their impact on the communities they serve.
