For the past three and a half years I've been involved in CDL (multiple sites) as a mentor, associate, and now I'm honored to be named a Fellow. Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) is an objectives-based program for massively scalable, seed-stage science- and technology-based companies. The program's objective-setting process enhances the performance of technical founders who learn from the insights of experienced entrepreneurs, increasing their probability of success. Founded in 2012 by Professor Ajay Agrawal at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, the program has now expanded with locations in Oxford, Paris (HEC), Atlanta (GeorgiaTech), Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary and Halifax in addition to Toronto. 2020 CDL workstreams include AI, AgTech, Blockchain, Climate, Energy, LifeSciences, MedTech, Smart Cities, Robotics, and the world's first Space & Quantum computing cohorts. Since its inception, companies that have participated in the CDL program have created more than $5.8 billion (CAD) in equity value. Targeting the "Invisible Economy" of service providers, who in the USA account for almost 1.27 trillion dollars of economic activity a year. The platform, which is mobile-first like the providers themselves, enables them to better manage, monetize and market their services to clients.

-  Conceived this mobile software startup targeting “solopreneurs” (solo small businesses) and brought it to an addressable market of 54m people eighteen months later that accounts for $2.7 trillion in transactional value per year in the US alone.
-  Raised two rounds of convertible debt totaling $2.5m.
-  Grew team to just over 10 f/t & p/t team members over several product cycles, with the commercial release in May 2015.
-  Post launch over 8 months built an audience of ~26k registered users with 20% active monthly.

Served as first non-executive board member remaining for more than 4 years until its successful 2014  exit to Telstra/Ooyala.  In 2011 was elected and served as Executive Chairman of the Board.  Served as coach and mentor to a young and talented CEO as he built and scaled his business from ~30 to over 100 FTE's, raising multiple successful Venture rounds totaling $20m+.

Richard was the CEO of Associated Northcliffe Digital (<a href="http://www.AND.co.uk">www.AND.co.uk</a>) the digital subsidiary of Daily Mail and General Trust (LSE: DMGT). He oversaw a £100m+ portfolio of digital businesses in the UK and eastern Europe, including Jobsite, Findaproperty, Primelocation, Motors.co.uk, and Teletext Holidays. The division was broken up into several operating units in July 2010, and Richard continued as an advisor until December 2010.

Richard was responsible for the operation and growth of the diverse AND portfolio and the larger consumer strategy on digital products and services globally. In his brief tenure he oversaw a turn-around of the business to profitability, simultaneous to its launch of two new businesses and expansion to the mobile and TV platforms.  Of special note was the launch of a mobile publishing business with in excess of 600k downloads in its 1st 90 days of operation.

Richard served as a Director and sat on the executive boards of Associated Newspapers, ANL Media, Landmark, ANI (the international arm of Associated Northcliffe) and all of  the AND portfolio companies, including Allegran, Artirix, Globrix, Jobsite, Findaproperty, Primelocation, TDPG, and Teletext.

Associated Northcliffe Digital (AND)

Initially hired as Global Controller of User Experience & Design he led a transformation of the BBC's consumer products including;
-  Led a pan-divisional effort to rationalize the BBC's brand hierarchy across its digital platforms.
-  Responsible for all aspects of audience experience across all digital products of the BBC.
-  Provided creative, thought & product leadership to the BBC's future media products and services across devices and platforms.
-  Early successes include the new BBC digital brand hierarchy & synchronization, BBC homepage, iPlayer (the world leading IPTV service), a re-designed Mobile service (most popular in Europe) and FreeSat.

In 2008 he was promoted to become one of three divisional leaders at the BBC reporting to the Director of FM&T, Erik Huggers (a BBC board member) and overseeing a portfolio of pan-BBC digital services & product groups.  His remit includes all BBC mobile propositions (including the award winning mobile service - one of the most popular in the world), mobile and radio versions of iPlayer.

He was also responsible for a portfolio of product groups, enabling technologies and services in the BBC's future media business including all of those related to the BBC's radio (60% of the UK radio output) and music offerings. Additionally, he managed the RAD (Rapid Application Development) team which feeds into and inspires new multimedia products and services for audiences of all BBC content divisions and services.

Richard sat on several organizational boards including BBC Online, the Audio & Music group board, as well as the BBC’s Olympic steering group.

WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR? premiered at the Sundance, SIFF and Tribeca film festivals in 2006 to critical acclaim, chronicles the life and mysterious death of the GM EV1, examining its cultural and economic ripple effects and how they reverberated through the halls of government and big business. Nominated for many awards including a WGA and a BAFTA this film is still one of the most discussed films of 2006. - Formed this UX powerhouse from the turn-around of 5 year old design service firm (re-branded Schematic) and its merger with another small LA digital agency - The Content Project.
-  Negotiated “work-out” of existing secured and unsecured debts and secured new long term financing.
-  Implemented reorganisation of staff and lines of accountability to enable accountability, profitability and effective client service delivery.
-  Positioned company to be the dominant firm in the world of User Interface for screen based entertainment, and later as one of the worlds largest and most successful Interactive Agencies.
-  Orchestrated, structured and negotiated reverse merger with leading Los Angeles interactive agency, The Content Project (now renamed Schematic) replacing himself with Trevor Kaufman as CEO in 2004.
-  Acted as the external "face" of the organization to clients, partners and the media and investment communities.
-  Successfully re-positioned firm as a top 10 Interactive agency as selected by Adweek. Clients include BMW, Comcast, Intel, Microsoft, Target and TimeWarner.
-  Oversaw integration of the merged entities, specifically working to craft and implement the combined service offering which remains in place today.
-  Crafted "go to market' strategy including PR, marketing, advertising and a speaker series; greatly increasing industry awareness in a short time
-  Lead strategic business development process for pipeline management as well as tools and processes for new client acquisition; delivering 300% increased new client revenue per year.
-  Managed business from near bankruptcy (annual net loss of $500k on $1.4 million in revenues in 2002) to revenues in excess of $39 million at date of sale to WPP in 2007.

On departing Razorfish, Richard with his then wife and producing partner Tavin founded Plinyminor. They developed and produced a variety of feature film and television projects including feature film On_line, a romantic drama/comedy about six characters whose relationships and sex lives are connected through and changed by the Internet, The Film premiered in 2002 at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals and was released theatrically in the US in July of 2003.  Other projects include documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? released theatrically worldwide by Sony Pictures Classics in 2006 and  a slate of SciFi genre films with the SciFi channel; one of which, Mammoth was nominated for an EMMY in 2006.
