The IFTF is an independent,  non-profit futures research organization established to help its clients think systematically about the future so that they can take strategic action today to build resilience.I directed IFTF's Health Futures Lab in fostering systematic thinking about health and health care among public and private organizations, innovators and communities. I led the program in conducting  futures research on health and health care, conducting private foresight work for clients such as Cigna, Novartis, and USAA. Trained others in leading foresight projects. Look for IFTF at <a href="http://www.iftf.org.Key">www.iftf.org.Key</a> Accomplishments- Re-articulated concept of Global Health Economy for clients, illuminating new pathways to producing health for the many over the next decade.- Produced customized tools for major insurance company to use to navigate disruptive forces affecting their business over the next decade.

Director, Health Futures Lab

Our mission was to reduce chronic disease among a 3.7 million member integrated health care system. As director of equitable care, I worked to develop scalable, patient-centered transgender care and benefits working nationally in partnership with KP’s Innovation Consultancy, and regionally with Northern CA Transgender Services leaders. Key Accomplishments- Led design research regionally and applied findings to ensure transgender patients have a great care experience across all touch points. - Conducted design fieldwork for national effort to build high-quality, patient-centered services across all KP regions.- Funded eight projects designed to rapidly prototype methods to reduce disparities in chronic conditions.

Kaiser Permanente

Executive Director, Equitable Care

I created the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Diversity Department with a mission to deliver the best care to each of our 3.7 million members. Looking beyond regulatory requirements to the most inspirational and effective solutions, I led my team and the region to envision pathways to health equity.  We used design and systems thinking to discover unforeseen connections and build solutions to improve all of our customer’s experiences. As part of this process, we brought labor and management together to make fundamental program changes previously thought immovable, and to build accountability in our bilingual program so that patients got better language assistance.Key Accomplishments - Built KPNC’s Language Access Program to exceed compliance with CA Department of Managed Care requirements.- Designed, prototyped, and delivered Translation Services which leveraged IT and approved vendors to deliver high quality translated documents and save upwards of $200K/year/region. Developed for Northern and Southern CA, it now serves all 7 KP regions.  - Solicited voices and observed actions of members, patients, staff and providers to design workflows and tools to make it easy and salient to provide qualified interpreter services.- Created, branded and deployed “Language Matters (LM),” a program of process changes and technology that delivers qualified interpreter services, on demand, across KPNC hospitals.- Prototyped and commissioned, application-based voice/video medical interpretation system, “KP LanguageConnect,” and rolled out to KP Northern California’s 21 hospitals. -Oversaw modification of over 30 IT systems and associated policies and procedures to  deliver vital documents in key languages.- Created a rapid-prototyping, disparities reduction innovation program, entitled Diversity Advancement Matching Grants that seeded an successful hypertension clinic for African Americans in Oakland.- Developed and managed a $2M operational budget.

Executive Director, Diversity

As 1st Vice President of the Board (2005-2007), I led a rabbi search that began with deep inquiry into the desires of synagogue members.  This inquiry led to the design of a search process that enabled a 17-member committee chosen for their differences of opinion to unanimously recommend hiring, perhaps, the first openly gay senior rabbi in a mainstream US synagogue. As President (2007-2009), I championed and ultimately succeeded in amending the bylaws to restructure the board of directors, cutting the size in half, and creating more effective oversight.  As Immediate Past President (2009-2011), I led the creation of the 60+ year old congregation’s first strategic plan with the introduction of two strategic questions, “What if we are a 500-household synagogue?” and “What if we focus not on growing, but on taking care of the members we have?” Key Accomplishments- Transition in rabbinic leadership.- Reorganization of volunteer leadership.- 13% membership growth and 24% increase in membership revenue since year prior to adoption of strategic plan.

Thought Provoker was a research, strategy and design consultancy serving academic, healthcare, and research firms.  We delivered research and analysis, facilitation and organizational design for institutional program development, reinvention and improvement.Key Accomplishments Conducted formative research, organizational design, and/or facilitation for:- Field Research Corp: research to develop and evaluate California State First 5 nutrition media campaign.- Institute for the Future: research leadership, design and facilitation for executive strategy sessions and conferences.- Kaiser Permanente Southern California: design and facilitation of visioning sessions to launch Latino market initiatives.- University of California Department of Medicine: organizational assessment for international reproductive health research.- University of California San Francisco, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology: business plan for $17M international AIDS research unit.- Oakland Children’s Hospital & Research Center: qualitative research to evaluate social service programs for foster care families.

Principal Consultant

The IFTF generates foresight and builds tools for gaining insights about the future that allow leaders to take prescient action today.  I led futures research projects in the Health Care Horizons program, consulted with member clients ranging from the Grocery Manufacturers of America to the Institute of Medicine, and led the Health Horizons program in 2002-2003.Key Accomplishments- Led forecasts on the futures of managed care, employee sponsored health benefits, and health consumers.- Secured the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine (<a href="http://www.iom.edu/">http://www.iom.edu/</a>), Committee on the Future of the Public’s Health as a client, and engaged the high-level committee in scenario planning that  informed their 2003 report that focused less on the public health infrastructure and more on a multi-sector approach to promoting the public’s health.

CHCF informs policymakers and industry leaders, invests in ideas and innovations, and connects with change-makers to create a more responsive, patient-centered health care system. (CHCF.org)I worked to organize the new Quality team and served as program officer for grantees developing healthcare quality measures and public reporting efforts.Key Accomplishments- Built strategy for newly formed Quality Initiative with Director.- Funded RAND Corporation’s development of performance metrics for medical groups.

Planning and Operations Officer, Quality Initiative

Among the first NIH-funded academic research centers established to end the HIV epidemic, the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) implements high-impact HIV prevention science and helps to build capacity among researchers and communities to address AIDS.I fostered collaboration to build a common language among epidemiologists, psychologists, substance abuse researchers, and population specialists.  I helped transform a group of independent research silos into a cohesive, multi-disciplinary teams.In the days well before rapid prototyping and co-creation, I prototyped community collaborative research in which those closest to the communities getting infected with HIV posed the questions and learned how to get the answers. I helped researchers  learn from service providers and vice versa.  This human-centered approach is still central to my innovation work today.Key Accomplishments- Designed and led the Center’s public programs and community research unit still in operation today.- Secured an managed 5-year, $3 million NIMH grant.- Established collaborative grant program that was replicated by University of California Office of the President, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.- Guided strategic direction and development of Center as member of the Executive Committee.- Edited special issue of Health Education & Behavior on community collaborative research.
