My time at PolySync was an excellent opportunity to engage with a market where the intersection of complexity, safety, and consumer impact is unprecedented. Myself and the Executive team positioned the company as an AV-development technology vendor to Automotive OEMs, Tier 1 & Tier 2 Suppliers, and academic R&D programs around the globe via two essential product offerings:

-  Core - a software suite for performing time-synchronized, high-fidelity recordings of vehicle & sensor data to be used in ML pipelines to produce better quality AI models.

-  DriveKit - a commercialization of our Open Source Car Control by-wire platform, which allows seemeless integration at the level of the vehicle electrical system to enable full-spectrum control of throttle, braking and steering for rigorous on-vehicle testing.

Given the nature of both the products and the market, I had numerous opportinities to engage directly with our Business Development activities to deeply understand the gaps in the market, the pace of AV development, the nuances of the automotive supply-chain, and how to position products and partnerships to align with all of them.

The most rewarding aspect of my time with the company was having the great privilege of refining and reforming the Engineering team. I built a team biased strongly toward Senior and Principal level experience, so that the company could tackle harder problems, more thoroughly, and more efficiently. The result was an innovative, high-functioning group of Engineers all deeply motivated by the problem domain and the expected rigors of the market.

I joined Visa as part of the initial Open VisaNet platform team.  Open VisaNet is Visa's ambitious, next-generation global payment and processing system that is designed to fuel significant growth and maintain current markets by being able to deploy into any regulatory environment at any scale.

Combining my experience in distributed systems with the experience of highly-skilled leaders in information security, mainframe computing, machine learning, and data center management; we worked together toward building a physically & virtually secure, highly-available, fault-tolerant system capable of scaling between local & global demand on commodity hardware & open source software.

In addition to Erlang application architecture & implementation expertise, I was able to introduce several concepts to the project and to Visa at-large which could fundamentally change the way that deployment, support, and system testing/verification are performed within the company.

Chaos-testing as a first principle, previously unseen in the QA pipeline, assisted us in finding several critical failure modes along edge cases ahead of deployment that would have otherwise gone unnoticed until production.  This framework for testing should become the basis for several modes of platform verification as well as eventually drive toward the capability for ops and application auto-remediation.

We also flipped the deployment & attestation process upside-down, by transitioning to declarative pipelines for handling software-defined networks, bare-metal provisioning, intrusion detection policy, network controls, and application artifacts.  This fundamentally mitigated the need for many expensive and heavyweight proprietary end-stage/runtime scanning tools.

Across the board we consistently collapsed the bill of materials & the requirement for heavy-handed human intervention.  Truly a ton of potentially interesting work and problem spaces to apply it to.  It was a "target-rich environment" as they say.

Due to company capitalization issues my stint as Chief Architect was brief, but managed to still achieve my three primary goals:

1) Lead a team of engineers away from being vertical stack oriented, developing in C# against MS SQL Server and MongoDB into becoming Scala developers focused on horizontal scale, infrastructure automation, and building solutions on top of tools such as Mesos, Kafka, Storm, and the Akka framework.

2) Study up on the common suite of machine learning algorithms, the leading research on how to best apply or tweak them for a given problem domain, and then ultimately dissect both the data structures and the operations to create practical, deployable, horizontally scalable versions of them for use in processing high-velocity, open-ended streams of data.

3) Professionally develop my team such that I could best align their future goals with the needs of the company and the technical challenges in front of us.  To further develop my team so that the next steps in their careers are either upward on the same track or lateral into a path better suited for them.

Though it would be nice to take the credit for those achievements, I can't deny it was made possible by the good fortune of working with a strong and dedicated team that was hungry to chart new territory and learn new skills.

Prototyped and implemented distributed systems and data-driven applications with leading enterprises in almost every major marketplace vertical and spanning several of the Fortune 50.

My client facing responsibilities covered conducting on-site training for Riak and distributed data modelling, application prototyping, and scalable infrastructure deployment.

Internally I worked on building customer-driven functionality and tools for Riak based on interesting and challenging use-cases and industry research.  Additionally, I provided support for the sales pipeline by engaging with prospects to quickly identify their needs and assess whether or not we were a good fit for their requirements or what it would take in level of effort to become one.

I was also chiefly responsible for developing training materials and strategies for teaching the difficult and often complex concepts of distributed systems, data, and computing to technical and non-technical audiences while also managing the growth and quality of Basho's training and education efforts by expanding them online and working with fellow Basho-ites to prepare them for the rigors of conducting training themselves.

Hard problems, high stakes, great people, and endless opportunities to learn and teach what I learned.  Tough to beat.

Developed a message bus for deployment/scale automation on top of Chef for AWS, Rackspace (1st & 2nd gen), and ProfitBricks IaaS platforms.

CenterStage & Ella's Supper Club was a fantastic arts organization at the heart of Spokane's downtown revival. It was a non-profit corporation which also oversaw a for-profit catering business. The venue provided an exceptional jazz club, a restaurant, two bars, dinner theater, ballroom, and event hall. It was a magical place.

Starting out as a Board member and then being ultimately elected as the President afforded me an enormous number of opportunities to work with the operations and finances of a diverse and nuanced corporate structure; as well as the opportunity to work with some of the most motivated and passionate people in the Spokane arts community.
