I had the incredible opportunity to join Tesla as the first Tesla Stores were being designed and created <a href="http://Tesla.com">Tesla.com</a>. We made buying a car as simple as ordering a book from Amazon. This included the whole customer experience: the website, the reservation system built to process hundreds of thousands of concurrent reservations during live events, the buying system that registered cars to DMVs, the delivery system, the final payment system that processed billions in revenue and the CRM system that kept cars and accounts up to date. Tesla was an exceptional experience and the privilege of reporting directly to Elon Musk for several years was unique, learning first principle problem solving from one of our very best.

Walmart offered the opportunity to scale what I had learned at Best Buy to an international market and multiple categories outside of consumer electronics. I enjoyed the mission of Walmart, bringing everyday low prices that materially improve our standard of living. My tenure was brief, but I met exceptional people and we are still close to this day.

Mobile and Platforms

I led the team that transformed Best Buy’s mobile WAP website into a fully transactional mobile channel. Using APIs that reached directly into ATG, we designed and built a mobile website, iPhone app, Android app, and in-store touchscreen display that gave customers the option to pre-order new movies and video games before their release date. This was my first P&L responsibility and I was hooked. Morning reports over coffee, agile software development during the day and edge-cached releases in the evening. I learned through trial and error which levers drove which outcomes and how to pull them in the right order to get super high CSAT ratings and exceptional revenue growth.

I designed the customer experience for Best Buy’s Speakeasy Voice, a voice-over-IP product. It didn't take off, but I learned a thing or two about how to run a business. Most important, listen to your customers!

I built web service applications that exposed COBOL-based mainframes and SAP general ledger accounts to modern distributed systems through transactional APIs. This allowed people to pay bills online directly from their checking account. This was cool, but once you’ve done it once, you really don’t want to do it again. There’s a reason why digital transformation is so expensive. I then worked with JP Morgan’s Investment Bank on a suite of tools that calculate and present the bank’s current exposure to large counterparties. I found the UI problems more challenging than the software, so I put on a new hat and learned user experience.

This job paid for college and I made friends for life. It was rad.
