I publish a Substack newsletter, Northern Journal, on Alaska's environment, energy industries, government and politics. I'm also a freelance writer and reporter for newspapers, magazines, and web publications including National Public Radio, the Washington Post, The Guardian, Hakai Magazine and Bowdoin Magazine.

I covered a range of topics for Alaska's statewide public radio network, including COVID-19, government and politics, environment and climate change, and the oil, tourism and fishing industries. 
I occasionally produced stories for national broadcast on NPR programs like All Things Considered, Weekend Edition and Here & Now, and sometimes filled in as a host for AKPM's statewide nightly news broadcast. 
My work was largely centered in Anchorage and Juneau but also took me to rural parts of Alaska. I've reported from the deck of a Bering Sea fishing boat, the back of a four-wheeler in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and a bicycle in Denali National Park.

I covered Alaska state government and politics, spending several months a year on assignment in Juneau covering the Legislature's annual session. Deadline reporting on breaking news and events as well as frequent enterprise and investigative features. Broke news on stories with national profiles ranging from a hacker's successful compromise of Alaska's elections system to the Trump administration's plans to built a controversial road through a national wildlife refuge.

Anchorage Daily News

Covering topics including public finance, economic development, and the 2013 mayoral election. 
Reported on the mayoral campaign, the impact of Hurricane Sandy, and gun control efforts following the Newtown shootings, and used public data to identify trends and themes for stories on campaign finance and hurricane recovery.

Freelance breaking news and feature stories, including several on Hurricane Sandy’s impact on Manhattan and Staten Island, as well as pieces on crime and the 2013 mayoral election. 
As an intern, wrote daily stories on crime, sports, local government, and other topics.

Spent two years as a beat writer on cross-country skiing, biathlon, and nordic combined. 
Covered the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver as a credentialed reporter, as well as the 2011 World Ski Championships in Norway, and reported on other events on-site in Estonia, Germany, Alaska, Idaho, and Las Vegas.
Now consulting, and writing occasionally.
