Alan Benson

Alan Benson is an Assistant Professor in the Work & Organizations group at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota– Twin Cities. His research focuses on people analytics and he applies his disciplinary background in personnel and labor economics to analyze personnel data of companies using microeconomic analytical tools to establish causal relationships between practices and outcomes.

Alan's teaching portfolio covers subjects like compensation, statistics, management, business economics, and negotiations for various levels of students including undergraduates, MBAs, executives, and doctoral candidates. He has also led a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Compensation and Benefits on the Coursera platform.

Apart from his academic roles, Alan actively engages in professional services like collaborating with companies to interpret HR data, presenting at conferences related to academic, people analytics, and sales management, reviewing submissions for peer-reviewed journals, contributing to departmental activities, conducting local professional development workshops, writing and speaking for popular media, mentoring students, and other typical duties expected of business school professors.

Alan Benson completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Sloan School of Management, holds a B.S. in Industrial and Labor Relations (Honors) from Cornell University, and studied Economics and Management at the University of Oxford.
