Based in Hong Kong, Stephen led a team of engineers, BAs, architects and project managers delivering digital Programs and initiatives in Hong Kong and China as part of the commercial banking digital transformation Program. These projects include enabling new banking channels to meet changing customer expectations utilising the WeChat platform (integration of third party solutions with middleware APIs, backend host systems and Business Service Layers) for such functionality as balance enquiry, payment tracking and notifications, finding branch and RM, voice to enquiry, virtual assistants and chatbots and a range of other value adding services. Stephen was also involved in a number of other channels including WEB, API, B2B, B2C and Omni.

In that capacity, Stephen sat on a range of steering, executive and other governance committees. The structure of the teams was both physical and virtual – with the core Program team being based in Hong Kong and engineers and other technical resources located in India, Xi’an and Guangzhou. Projects were largely Agile-based at the front end with alignment to waterfall methodologies for legacy systems. Stephen travelled regularly to ensure project teams were working effectively and aligned to business outcomes and was able to leverage his sensitivity and experience in managing cultural and behavioural factors relating to staff performance.

Senior Digital Program Director, Commercial Banking (CMB)

Based in Hong Kong in a regional role, Stephen was responsible for IT delivery best practices and Centre of Excellence for tools, processes, standards and technologies across 10 countries. The role included responsibility for the deployment of a Project Portfolio Management (Planview) platform which is a cloud-based workflow solution across Asia along with other platforms such as Walkme (a cloud-based enterprise class platform for improving customer and employee online experience) and Blueprint (requirements management solution for automating use case and test case production and optimisation and facilitating agile development).

Stephen was also responsible for training strategy and project assurance and led project reviews on under-performing programs to determine recovery strategies. This included assessing technical fit and alignment to architecture, validating project commercials, vendor management, cultural and organisational barriers inhibiting deliverables and overall project delivery capability and maturity.

Senior Director (Contract)

Regional ownership of technology programmes in the General Insurance Property and Casualty (P&C) portfolio with responsibility for delivery across Asia. Individual programmes each are in excess of USD 40M and involve complex sales enablement platforms for a variety of general insurance products sold in many geographies. In this role, Stephen drove the digital transformation of these lines of business. Staff under Stephen’s programme were circa 200, both onshore and offshore. The role included management of many vendors aligned to the various work streams.

Stephen was the Asia Director for UXC Consulting Group (ASX: UXC), where he had full P&L accountability for the operations of UXC in Asia including sales and marketing, HR, finance and administration. In this role, Stephen led a team of consultants, trainers and other staff based in Singapore, Malaysia and other countries. Stephen spearheaded key sales activity across Asia and achieved significant, million dollar plus enterprise solutions sales in such technologies as ServiceNow, Kofax, IT professional services and IT best practice training contracts.

Stephen leads the Business Management team within the Infrastructure Technology Services Group. Stephen was selected to develop this function as part of the Global Services Operating Model.

Business Management encompasses Finance, Risk, Workforce Management, Enterprise PMO (EPMO), Vendor Management and Asset Management. The role includes management of more than 50 employees located in different international hubs and oversight of a budget of $270M AUD.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, Stephen is involved in strategic and operational decisions that direct the delivery of IT services to a range of internal business units The role also includes financial management and governance and development of technology business plans. Stephen has been instrumental in driving initiatives that have saved in excess of $30M AUD to technology operations.

Working for Melco International Development Limited in Macau, Stephen was the Head of Technology and master planning during construction of the City of Dreams Casino and Integrated Resort in Macau. This project was a USD $3.5 Billion dollar development comprising four hotels, casino, serviced apartments, theatre and retail and entertainment features occupying a vast area in the Cotai Strip area of Macau. 

Stephen was responsible for the incorporation and management of all technology for the resort including networking, structured cabling, IP telephony, Extra Low Voltage (ELV) systems, communications, security, surveillance and access controls and audio visual technology for guestrooms, podium, gaming floor and retail spaces and associated tender packages. The project represented the largest implementation of a fully IP-based data infrastructure of its type in the world at that time and has won many technology awards since. Stephen managed a technology budget of over $300 Million (USD) and worked closely with the owner, construction company, architects, engineering firms, MEP and regulatory/governmental bodies.

In this role, Stephen worked with many current and emerging technologies spanning data networks and data centres, gaming applications, AV entertainment solutions and IP telephony and Internet. The role is indicative of the value Stephen adds to organisations by taking a risk management approach to delivering major infrastructure. In this capacity, he manages client/owner risk (both financial and reputational) by interfacing between the client and the suite of vendors tasked with delivering the solution and meeting the required specifications and handover obligations.

Stephen managed a program of work (in excess of $50M AUD) running a team of 40+ technical resources both in Australia and Bangalore, India.  The group was responsible for the delivery of infrastructure-based technology solutions to different business areas within the bank.  The programs of work encompassed network design, middleware, recovery management, risk and compliance, third party vendors and production transition.

Stephen consulted to Yallourn Energy's CIO on the organisation’s IT security and data management compliance and aligned them with Australian and international standards and advised the Executive on best practice and legal and regulatory risk exposure.  This led to a strategic review encompassing major systems, business continuity and disaster recovery planning and network infrastructure.  The review addressed key technology issues as well as making a series of recommendations for process and management restructuring to ensure compliance with current legislation.  Stephen worked closely with the executive team to ensure corporate strategy was supported by the IT / IM environment within a governance regime.

Stephen wrote and presented all English language product films as well as developing the business into other European markets. Softvision products attracted the interest of industry CEOs who volunteered to participate as featured guests. These included Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, Jim Manzi, Phillipe Khan, Dr. Michael Cowpland and other significant industry figures.
