Designing products with electronics.Newest:  Just made a template for a shield for an Arduino Yun.Got info from the vendor and now am working on the design for the customer.Worked on firmware to give a PIC16F1828 a real time clock then shut off after 6, 7, or 8 hours.Am successful despite problems with hardware and firmware.Another recent project was as part of a team developing "wearable technology", a battery powered controller based around an MSP430 to control up to 6A through a heating element.Plus interesting arguments about safety of heating, Li Batteries, etc.Including using micro controllers by Microchip and Atmel as part of a larger system. And again working with power, namely designing small switching regulators.3.3V and 100 mA doesn't seem like much, but from a 10V to 12V battery would need to waste a lot of power as heat with a linear regulator. Developing products around this microcontrollers, products that use Real Time Clocks, stepper motors, LCD displays and/or I/O extensions.Capturing schematics using OrCAD or EAGLE, laying out the PCBs with Allegro or EAGLE.

Set up lab and maintain fixtures including electronic loads and other instruments.  Repair and modify SMD boards for testing and build prototype circuits by soldering and unsoldering in a RoHS environ.  Design prototype circuits.  Take and process data using Word, Excel, and Labview.Design and built electronic load for demonstrating products. Creat the analog signals and the loading elements (up to 5V and 5A) to interface with a microcontroller to a GUI.  Captured schematics and laid out board.  Worked with purchasing to get parts to hand build prototypes to "prove the concept".  Debugged that circuit.  Maintained BoM.Determine how to take oscilloscope measurements in a noisy environment from noisy (switching power supply) products.Maintained instrument calibration for lab.  Sent out instruments to the calibration service on schedule and kept track of which instruments were out at calibration, which were in the lab and what needed to go to calibration.

In general I Design circuits, Capture schematics, layout circuit boards for customers.  Plus other skills such as analyzing a Bill of Material (BoM) to determine which parts are the largest portion of the total parts cost and how to reduce those costs.Developed test plans and test procedures, design and build test fixtures for customers.Some recent work is extending the I/O of relatively in expensive microcontrollers using shift registers.For serial in parallel out data I have used the 74HC595.For serial or parallel in AND serial or parallel out I have used 74HC194.Design instructions for hand building circuit board assemblies, rework instructions and actual rework of circuit boards.  Adept at soldering down to 30 mil pitch ICs using RoHS or Non RoHS techniques.Assembled, debugged, modified and wrote code for a system based around a Microchip PIC24FJ64GB004.  Including cabling, rework, troubleshooting and testing. Assisted other team members.Developed a hardware shield & firmware for Arduino Mega that counts and sounds a optional 130millisecond noise at each count.  It is for an "Um Counter" used by Toastmasters.  Developed a simple counter board with seven segment LED displays for my Toastmasters group.Working on two 'Shield' boards, one with two daughter boards for a client to use on his Arduino Mega.  The other is a generic for the Arduino Duemilanove, six high current digitally controlled switches to ground, six analog inputs.  Still sitting on a "Hardened Arduino" for the client to approve the completion of the project.  This version is set up to allow a daughter board for more application development space. The test plan for that product is completed and implemented.  Test plan included firmware for a ATmega328, and can be used on an Arduino Nano.  Plus I have developed three applications for this product. Developed applications for Anadigm FPAA, Field Programmable Analog Array used on the Servenger Programmable Analog Module (PAM5002)

Also December 2007 to PresentOn site at Intel.Wrote test procedures and rework instructions.  Tested and reworked boards. Loaded FPGA and processor firmware.   Designed test fixture to test cables.  Isolated failing boards and performed rudimentary FMEA tracking while searching for root cause of failure.  Tracked and managed stock of boards, cables, etc for shipment to customers.  Served as circuit board consultant regarding layout and design.  Modified existing 8052 code of board to add two new commands to control.  Worked with GUI designer to develop user interface.  Used Visio to create block diagrams and flow charts of control processes.

Designed fixtures to test battery charger assemblies.Created schematics in OrCAD and simple mechanical designs in AutoCAD. Designed complete analog system including circuit board and cables. Very busy during the post Thanksgiving shopping season, tapering off as Christmas got close.During this second season some Customer Service work was added.  Most often simply telling a customer what their order number was and that, yes, it is scheduled to ship on...was enough to keep several customers happy.  Those that were not satisified with this were passed on to Customer Service for further help.

Contract Analog Design Electrical Engineer Support of analog design processes in printer development. Designed test fixtures to evaluate designs of motors and motor drivers. This including state machines and sensing circuits to mimic the function of the more complex controller board driving PWM signals to modulate fan speeds. Documented construction with schematics, bills of material, and other drawings. Wrote instructions to rework one PCI to a different PCA.Troubleshooting: Performed electrical and thermal tests including gathering data from thermocouples and infrared cameras and analyzing data. Supported vibration testing of circuit board. Verifying design adequacy over all ranges of line voltage expected.Assisted summer students in learning electrical engineering principles and select projects that these students could do that were useful investigations.
