The Global Web Operations group has charge of the variety of non-trading floor external-facing web sites of NYSE Euronext.   I'm in the group that keeps on eye on those systems and gets them back on the air if they get into trouble.    We interface with the development groups too to carry out the configuration management chores as new versions of software become available.  It's a mix of Linux (Red Hat) and Windows servers with heavy use of Drupal and PHP.  On the back end MySQL seems predominant here.   Authentication is a mix of Active Directory and LDAP.  Python is an oft-used base for administrative tools.  A richly varied environment with a near constant element of change and a delightfully talented and dedicated crew of co-workers keeping it all afloat.  At this point I'm the new guy.  I've got familiarity with some of the tools, but am a definite beginner at understanding the complexities of the network and the many applications and their interconnections.   Fortunately, I enjoy digging in and learning new stuff and enlarging each day the group of co-workers who I know and can reach out to.  We're currently setting up a new instance of a document management system for the many regulatory filings that are such an important element of this firm's business.

Responsible for fixing any ills with the network, server and desktop systems at this Real Estate Development firm.   The bulk of the company's computer work was Autocad.    The bulk of the company's network woes were from bad connectors on the building wiring.   There was also excitement when the death of a cooling fan caused an outage of their server.

Summer Job.   I was a System Programmer for their conversion from Mainframe DOS to Mainframe OS/VS1.   I coded up some exit routines to tailor the environment and answered questions from the application developers as we worked to convert their data center.

Summer job.  I revised a Cobol program to produce inventory reports.   I added a feature to flag peculiar looking inventory levels so the warehouses could investigate and correct the records as appropriate.   (I'd previously done clerical work in one of their warehouses as a past summer job, so I had familiarity with what to look out for in this particular report).
