Sharon Redd was a prominent American singer and songwriter known for her infectious dance hits in the 1980s disco era. Born in 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she grew up surrounded by music and began singing in her church choir at a young age. She joined the R&B vocal group "The Harlettes" in 1975 and later signed with Prelude Records, where she released her first single, "Can You Handle It?" which became an instant hit.
Redd's smooth and powerful voice quickly gained popularity, and she went on to release several other successful dance singles, including "Beat the Street," "Love How You Feel," and "In the Name of Love." Her music was characterized by its infectious beats, catchy melodies, and soulful vocals, which continue to inspire dancers and music lovers alike.
Aside from her music career, Redd also appeared in various stage productions, such as the Broadway musical "Smokey Joe's Cafe." She was also a fixture in New York's nightclub scene and performed regularly at popular venues such as Studio 54 and Paradise Garage.
Sadly, Sharon Redd passed away in 1992 at the age of 47 due to complications from pneumonia. However, her music and legacy continue to live on and influence modern dance and pop music.
